Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the Clouds

At 8:30 AM, the glass-and-steel monolith of the Reforma Financial Center gleamed like a blue crystal under the brilliant morning sun.

The 40th floor was a breathtaking space—a double-height glass atrium overlooking the green expanse of Chapultepec Park and the historic castle on the hill. White marble floors, massive orchid displays, and sleek leather seating gave the venue an aura of absolute power and unassailable wealth.

Senator Eduardo Sterling stood near the catering bar, sipping a espresso from a porcelain cup. He looked magnificent in a bespoke navy suit, a gold signet ring sparkling on his pinky finger as he laughed heartily with two foreign investment bankers from Madrid.

Beside him, standing discreetly near a marble pillar, was Rodrigo Salvatierra. His face was pale, a thick white bandage covering his left cheek where the superheated steam had burned his skin. His hand remained buried inside his jacket, his eyes nervously scanning every person stepping off the high-speed executive elevators.

"Relax, Rodrigo," Sterling murmured under his breath, taking a slow sip of his coffee. "Rivera is a coward. He’s a soft boy who grew up with money and judges. He’s probably halfway to his villa in Los Cabos by now, praying I don't strip him of his board seat."

"He took the drive, Senator," Salvatierra gritted out through clenched teeth. "And the maid knows everything."

"A maid's word against a United States-educated senator and a former police captain?" Sterling sneered softly. "In this city? Please. The contract gets signed in fifteen minutes. Once the ink is dry, Rivera can throw all the tantrums he wants in civil court."

DING.

The private chime of the executive express elevator echoed through the high atrium.

The heavy brushed-steel doors slid open.

Every head in the atrium turned.

Alejandro Rivera stepped out of the elevator. He was dressed impeccably in a three-piece charcoal suit, a dark silk tie, and a white pocket square. He looked like the undisputed king of the financial district—calm, majestic, and completely in control.

Walking beside him was Sofia Vance, carrying a heavy leather briefcase.

And walking directly behind them, flanked by two private security officers in suit jackets, was Lucía Moreno. She was no longer wearing her housekeeper's apron. She wore a tailored dark blue dress, her long hair pinned up in a chic twist, her chin held high, her eyes fixed entirely on Eduardo Sterling.

A murmur swept through the gathered crowd of investors, journalists, and corporate board members.

Sterling’s porcelain coffee cup froze halfway to his lips. His eyes widened in absolute shock as he stared at the group walking toward him across the white marble floor.

Salvatierra’s hand twitched violently inside his coat pocket.

"Eduardo," Alejandro called out, his deep voice carrying effortlessly across the vast atrium, silencing the room instantly. "You shouldn't have started the meeting without me."

Sterling recovered his composure in a heartbeat. He forced a broad, warm smile onto his face and stepped forward with open arms, as if greeting a beloved nephew.

"Alejandro!" Sterling declared loudly, aiming his voice for the benefit of the surrounding journalists. "My dear boy! We were worried about you! There were rumors you had been delayed by a personal emergency last night."

"No emergency, Eduardo," Alejandro said, stopping five feet from the senator. "Just a minor maintenance issue in the sub-basement of the Miraluna."

Sterling’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, his eyes darting briefly to the bandage on Salvatierra’s face.

"I see you brought guests," Sterling said, his tone turning cooler as he glared at Lucía. "This is a private executive board session, Alejandro. Non-shareholders are not permitted on the floor."

"Miss Moreno is not a guest, Senator," Sofia Vance interjected sharply, pulling a thick stack of legal documents from her briefcase and holding them up for the crowd and the camera crews to see. "She is the primary trustee of the Moreno-Guerrero Estate, as well as the key witness in a federal RICO investigation opened one hour ago by the Fifth Circuit District Court."

The journalists in the atrium immediately surged forward, flashbulbs exploding like a thousand lightning strikes across the glass walls.

FLASHLIGHTS! FLASH! FLASH!

"What RICO investigation?" an international financial reporter called out, thrusting a microphone over the velvet ropes. "Mr. Rivera, is Grupo Horizonte facing federal charges?"

"This is absurd!" Sterling thundered, his face flushing dark red as he turned to the security guards near the elevators. "Security! Escort these people out of the building immediately! They are disrupting a legal corporate proceeding!"

None of the security guards moved.

Mateo stepped out from behind a marble pillar near the entrance, holding a radio unit. The hotel's private security team had already taken control of the building's floor access.

"Read the room, Eduardo," Alejandro said softly, stepping closer to the older man. "It’s over."

"You idiot," Sterling hissed under his breath, stepping so close to Alejandro that only he could hear. "You think a few news cameras can ruin me? I have judges in my pocket! I have the ministry of housing! You are destroying your own family’s fortune for a maid you met six hours ago!"

"She isn't just a maid, Eduardo," Alejandro replied, his dark eyes burning into Sterling's soul. "She’s the woman who showed me what a monster you really are."

Alejandro signaled to Sofia. She stepped forward and handed an iPad directly to the chairman of the board, who was standing wide-eyed beside the podium.

"On that screen, Chairman," Sofia announced loudly, "you will find the real-time decryption of the secret ledger maintained by Senator Sterling from 2018 to 2026. It documents forty-two million dollars in illegal bribes, forced land evictions, and direct orders given to former officer Salvatierra to eliminate witnesses—including the late Mayor of Colonia Guerrero."

A collective gasp echoed through the room.

The chairman looked down at the iPad screen. His face drained of all color within five seconds. He slowly looked up at Sterling, his eyes filled with horror.

"Eduardo..." the chairman whispered. "What have you done?"

Salvatierra, realizing that his life was completely ruined, lost his mind. He pulled the black suppressed pistol from his jacket and leveled it directly at Lucía’s chest!

"DIE, YOU BITCH!" Salvatierra screamed.

"NO!" Lucía gasped.

In a fraction of a second—faster than the human eye could process—Alejandro stepped directly between the gun and Lucía. He grabbed Salvatierra’s wrist with a crushing grip, twisting the weapon upward toward the high glass ceiling just as a shot fired!

BANG!

The heavy safety glass panel forty feet above shattered into ten thousand shimmering pieces, raining down like silver dust across the marble floor.

Alejandro drove a brutal right hook into Salvatierra’s jaw, knocking the ex-cop off his feet. Salvatierra crashed heavily onto a glass cocktail table, unconscious before he hit the floor.

Before Sterling could make a move toward the service exit, the heavy double doors of the atrium were kicked open.

A tactical squad of federal agents in black uniforms, led by federal prosecutors from the Attorney General's office, flooded into the room with rifles raised.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DON'T MOVE! DOWN ON THE GROUND!"

Senator Eduardo Sterling stood frozen in the center of the glittering, ruinous marble floor. His bespoke suit was covered in tiny fragments of shattered glass, his gold signet ring reflecting the blue lights of the police cruisers gathering forty floors below.

Federal marshals stepped forward, grabbed Sterling’s arms, pulled them roughly behind his back, and clicked heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

As Sterling was dragged past Alejandro toward the elevators, he glared at his former protegé with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You lost everything today, Rivera," Sterling spat, his voice trembling with venom. "Your company is ruined. Your stock is worthless."

Alejandro looked at the disgraced politician with absolute calm. He adjusted his silk tie, turned his back on the man, and took Lucía’s hand into his own.

"I didn't lose anything, Eduardo," Alejandro said quietly as the elevator doors closed on the senator forever. "I just bought my soul back."
