Chapter 2 - The Dominoes Fall

The glass-walled board room on the forty-second floor of the Keaton Tower offered a panoramic view of the Nashville skyline. Normally, when Grant Keaton walked into this room, men twenty years his senior stood up to shake his hand. They laughed at his golf jokes, poured his scotch, and trusted him with tens of millions of dollars of their capital.

Tonight, as Grant pushed open the heavy glass doors at precisely 5:50 PM, the atmosphere inside was as warm as a mortuary.

Eight members of the Board of Directors sat around the long conference table. At the head of the table sat Arthur Pendelton, a ruthless seventy-year-old venture capitalist whose firm held forty percent of Keaton Holdings’ equity. Sitting beside Arthur was not a corporate lawyer, but Corinne’s lead attorney, Eleanor Vance—a legendary family law strategist known throughout the Southeast as "The Executioner."

Grant smoothed his suit jacket, forcing his chin up, trying to project the unshakeable confidence that had carried him through a decade of high-stakes real estate deals.

“Arthur, gentlemen,” Grant began, stepping toward his usual seat at the head of the table. “I see we’ve gathered on short notice. There has been a terrible misunderstanding manufactured by my wife during a sensitive domestic dispute. I assure you—”

“Sit down, Grant,” Arthur interrupted. His voice was quiet, flat, and chillingly absolute. He didn't point to the head of the table; he pointed to a single plastic chair positioned against the side wall.

Grant’s face flushed red. “Arthur, I am the founder and Chief Executive Officer of this firm—”

“You were the Chief Executive Officer until two hours ago,” Arthur said, picking up a thick, leather-bound binder identical to the one Grant had found in his office. “At four o'clock this afternoon, Mrs. Vance delivered a complete forensic audit of Keaton Holdings’ operational accounts for the past eighteen months. An audit performed and certified by two independent CPA firms, verified by your wife.”

Arthur opened the binder, tossing a single page across the table toward Grant.

“Care to explain why three hundred and fifty thousand dollars from the West End Luxury Condominium construction fund was routed through a logistics firm registered in the Cayman Islands, only to end up purchasing a three-bedroom penthouse at the Pinehurst Resort in South Carolina?” Arthur asked. “Or why seventy thousand dollars of investor equity paid for jewelry, designer clothing, and monthly lease payments for a woman named Tessa Vaughn?”

Grant stared at the page. His mind raced frantically, searching for a legal loophole, a corporate excuse, a scapegoat. “That... those were misallocated administrative expenses! My accounting team made an error—”

“Your accounting team didn't make an error, Grant,” Eleanor Vance spoke up, her sharp grey eyes locking onto him like steel hooks. “You personally signed every single wire authorization. You deliberately bypassed the chief financial officer by creating secondary sub-accounts using your master administrative key. You committed corporate embezzlement to finance your extramarital lifestyle because you assumed your wife was too busy taking care of your infant child to notice.”

“This is a private marital matter!” Grant shouted, turning his wrath toward Eleanor. “Corinne is using confidential corporate data to blackmail me in a divorce proceeding! That is a breach of fiduciary duty! I will sue her and your firm into the dirt!”

Eleanor smiled—a cold, slow, utterly terrifying gesture.

“Mrs. Keaton did not breach any duty, Mr. Keaton,” Eleanor said smoothly. “As a registered shareholder holding a fifteen percent voting stake, she exercised her legal right under State Corporate Code Section 48 to inspect corporate records upon reasonable suspicion of fraud. And as a former federal forensic analyst, her methodology is bulletproof. The District Attorney’s Financial Crimes Division has already received a copy of this audit.”

Grant felt the floor dropping away beneath his feet. “The District Attorney?”

Arthur stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. He looked at Grant with pure disgust.

“Effective immediately, Grant, the Board of Directors has voted unanimously to terminate your employment as CEO for cause,” Arthur announced. “Your corporate credentials have been revoked. Security will escort you from the premises. Furthermore, Keaton Holdings is filing a civil lawsuit against you personally to recover every single dollar you stole from our investors.”

“Arthur, please! Let me explain!” Grant took a desperate step forward, but the board room doors swung open.

Two burly, uniformed security guards stepped into the room. They didn't treat him like the founder of the company. They grabbed Grant firmly by the elbows, pinning his arms to his sides.

“Get your hands off me!” Grant struggled, his voice echoing loudly through the polished corridors. “Do you know who I am?! I built this company! I built this tower!”

The directors didn't even look up as Grant was unceremoniously marched out of the boardroom, down the private executive elevator, and shoved through the rear service doors into the cold, drizzling night air of the alley behind Keaton Tower.

His phone began ringing violently in his pocket.

Grant pulled it out with trembling, slippery hands. The caller ID showed Tessa Vaughn.

He pressed the phone to his ear. “Tessa! Thank God—”

“Grant! What the hell is happening?!” Tessa screamed over the line, her voice hysterical, devoid of the soft, sweet tone she used when they were in Charleston. “Two men in suits just showed up at my apartment building! The landlord told me my lease has been terminated because the rent payments came from an illicit account! My credit cards just got declined at the grocery store! What did you do?!”

“Tessa, calm down,” Grant gasped, leaning against the damp brick wall of the alley, his designer suit ruined by the rain. “It’s Corinne... she found out. She froze the accounts. It’s a temporary setback—”

“A temporary setback?!” Tessa shrieked. “They served me with a subpoena, Grant! They are suing me as a co-conspirator to recover the money you gave me! They’re threatening to take my car! You told me you were a billionaire! You told me you had everything under control!”

“I do! I just need time—”

“Don't ever call me again, Grant!” Tessa screamed. “You ruined my life!”

The call disconnected.

Grant stood alone in the dark alley, the cold rain soaking through his shirt, plastering his hair to his forehead. In less than four hours, he had lost his family, his home, his company, his reputation, and the woman he had traded it all for.

He pulled up Corinne’s contact details on his phone. He dialed her personal number.

“The number you have dialed has been disconnected or is no longer in service.”

He tried her email. Auto-reply: Account deactivated.

She hadn't just left him. She had systematically erased his existence from her life, leaving behind only the wreckage of his own crimes to crush him.
