Chapter 2 - The Morning After

While Claire was recovering in the VIP private wing on the top floor of Lakeshore Memorial—protected by private security guards posted outside her door—Ethan Carter was waking up in Suite 402 of the Bellweather Hotel.

The morning sun filtered through heavy velvet curtains. Ethan sat up on the edge of the bed, rubbing his face, feeling the dull ache of a hangover.

Beside him, Vanessa Blake was curled in the sheets, sipping black coffee from room service, scrolling casually through her tablet. She didn't look like a woman who had taken a bottle of pills hours earlier. She looked perfectly fine, wrapped in a plush hotel robe.

“What time is it?” Ethan grunted, reaching for his phone on the nightstand.

“Almost eight,” Vanessa said lightly. “Relax, Ethan. The world didn't end because you spent one night away from home.”

Ethan clicked his phone screen on. There were no missed calls. No text messages.

He frowned. When he had left Claire in Exam Room Seven, she was crying, bleeding, and surrounded by frantic nurses. He had expected her to spam his phone with desperate calls all night. He had spent the car ride to the hotel drafting justifications in his head—how Vanessa was in a mental health crisis, how Claire was always exaggerating her cramps, how he was doing his duty as a caring boss.

But there was nothing. Silence.

A strange, uncomfortable tightness settled in his chest.

“I should check on Claire,” Ethan said, standing up and pulling on his trousers. “She was throwing a huge scene at the hospital last night. The doctors were playing along, talking about placental issues or whatever.”

Vanessa rolled her eyes softly. “Ethan, she does this every time you have a major business dinner. She feels insecure because she stays home while you build an empire. If you run back to her the second she fake-cries, she’ll keep doing it.”

“I’m not running back,” Ethan lied, fastening his belt. “I just want to get her discharged so I don't have to hear her complain about hospital bills.”

Ethan drove his Mercedes to Lakeshore Memorial Hospital, parking in the visitor lot. He adjusted his suit coat in the mirror, putting on his stern, disappointed husband face. He planned to walk into Exam Room Seven, tell Claire that her behavior was unacceptable, and explain that Vanessa’s life had been in danger.

He walked up to the main reception desk in the Emergency Department.

“I’m here to see my wife, Claire Carter,” Ethan said smoothly to the receptionist. “She was brought in around six yesterday evening.”

The receptionist typed into her computer. She paused, frowned, and typed again.

“Sir, I don't see a Claire Carter in our system.”

Ethan chuckled, shaking his head. “Check again. C-A-R-T-E-R. She was in Exam Room Seven with Dr. Fields.”

The receptionist scanned her screen, then called over a floor nurse. The nurse looked at Ethan, then looked at her monitor, her expression turning completely unreadable.

“Mr. Carter,” the nurse said flatly. “There is no patient named Claire Carter registered at this facility.”

“That’s impossible!” Ethan’s voice raised, attracting glances from waiting patients. “I brought her here myself! She was bleeding! She was thirty-one weeks pregnant! Don't play games with me, where is my wife?”

A man in a crisp charcoal suit stepped out from an adjacent hallway. It was Marcus Hale.

“Mr. Carter,” Marcus said calmly, holding a black leather briefcase. “If you are looking for the mother of your child, you won't find anyone registered under your surname here.”

Ethan spun around, recognizing the veteran corporate attorney. Marcus Hale was a legend in Midwest legal circles—a man who worked exclusively for ultra-high-net-worth families.

“Hale?” Ethan blinked, completely thrown off guard. “What are you doing here? Did Claire hire you? Is this some kind of ridiculous joke?”

“It’s no joke, Ethan,” Marcus said, pulling a sealed envelope from his coat pocket and handing it to him. “You were removed as Claire’s medical proxy, emergency contact, and authorized visitor at 2:10 a.m. today. Your access to her medical records has been legally blocked under strict privacy protocols.”

Ethan snatched the envelope, his hands trembling slightly. “You can’t do that! I’m her husband! We are legally married!”

“You were her husband when you abandoned her while she was actively hemorrhaging to attend to your mistress at a hotel,” Marcus replied, his voice dropping into an icy register. “Claire underwent an emergency C-section early this morning.”

Ethan froze. The air left his lungs.

“A... C-section?” Ethan stammered. “Is... is the baby okay? Is it a boy or a girl?”

“Your daughter is currently in the NICU,” Marcus said. “And under the legal instructions filed by her mother, you are barred from entering the floor. Furthermore, you have been served.”

Ethan pulled the papers from the envelope. Printed across the top in bold, black letters was: PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE & EMERGENCY RESTRAINING ORDER.

“She’s divorcing me?” Ethan laughed nervously, though his forehead was sweating profusely. “Over one argument? She’s emotionally unstable right now! The hormones from the pregnancy—!”

“Read page three, Ethan,” Marcus interrupted sharply.

Ethan flipped the page. Attached was a formal legal notice from Whitmore Capital Holdings.

Notice of Immediate Loan Acceleration and Revocation of Trust Guarantees on Carter Urban Holdings Project #4 (The Riverfront Towers).

Ethan’s phone began to vibrate violently in his pocket. He pulled it out. The caller ID showed his Chief Financial Officer, Brad.

Ethan answered, his voice tight. “Brad, I’m in the middle of something—”

“Ethan, where the hell are you?!” Brad panicked over the line. “The primary lender for the Riverfront project just froze our construction draw accounts! They said the $40 million underwriting guarantee provided by the Whitmore Trust was revoked at midnight! The contractors are walking off the job site right now!”

Ethan felt the ground tilt beneath his feet. “What? Whitmore Trust? What are you talking about? Our loan was backed by Carter Urban’s assets!”

“No, it wasn't, Ethan!” Brad yelled. “Your wife’s maternal trust was the sole guarantor! Didn't you know that? Without that guarantee, we are in default of $40 million by 5:00 p.m. today! We’re bankrupt, Ethan!”

Ethan slowly lowered his phone. He stared at Marcus Hale in horror.

“Claire... Claire did this?” Ethan whispered.

“Claire protected you for six years because she thought you were a man worth saving,” Marcus said quietly, closing his briefcase. “You proved her wrong last night. Welcome to the real world, Ethan.”
