Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Confrontation

Forty-eight hours later.
The emergency shareholder meeting of Cole Enterprises took place on the top floor of the Cole Tower in downtown Boston.
Richard Hayes sat at the head of the mahogany conference table, smiling comfortably as he addressed the board members. He had called the meeting to push through a final vote that would strip Nathaniel of his executive voting power due to "prolonged personal leave and emotional instability."
"Gentlemen, ladies," Richard said smoothly, pouring himself a glass of water. "Nathaniel is a brother to me, but his grief has rendered him incapable of leading this empire. For the sake of our investors—"
The heavy double doors of the boardroom burst open.
Nathaniel walked in, looking sharp, immaculate, and possessed of a formidable, towering presence that the board had not seen since before Elise's death.
Beside him walked two federal prosecutors and four armed FBI agents.
Richard’s glass slipped from his fingers, shattering against the mahogany table. "Nathaniel...? What is the meaning of this?"
"The vote is canceled, Richard," Nathaniel said coldly, walking to the head of the table and tossing the blue audit folder onto the center of the desk. "And so is your freedom."
The lead prosecutor stepped forward, holding a federal arrest warrant. "Richard Hayes, you are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and the second-degree murder of Elise Cole."
Gasps erupted across the boardroom. Board members scrambled out of their chairs in shock.
Richard’s face drained of all color, his lips trembling as he backed away toward the floor-to-ceiling windows. "Nathaniel... wait! You don't understand! She was going to ruin everything we built! It was an accident—the truck was only supposed to scare her—!"

"You took the mother of my children," Nathaniel said, stepping directly into Richard's space, his voice resonant with absolute authority. "You tried to break my family into pieces. But we survived you."
The FBI agents moved in, forcing Richard to his knees and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. As Richard was dragged out of the boardroom in shame, the remaining board members stood in stunned silence, watching their true CEO take his rightful seat at the head of the table once more.
