Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the System

On board The Sovereign, sitting in the plush leather chair of the stateroom, Serena watched the real-time thermal and acoustic feed from the Tribeca penthouse on the central monitor.

The audio pickup was crystal clear. She heard every word Nolan had spoken to Vanessa. She heard the smug, condescending laughter. She heard the shattering of the front door, the cold interrogation by Vance’s enforcers, and the final, heavy silence that followed the gunfire.

Serena did not flinch. Her hands resting on the desk were steady.

For eleven years, she had convinced herself that Nolan was just weak—that his narcissism was a flaw she could manage with patience and support. Hearing him casually dismiss her as a "sad little ghost" who belonged in Queens stripped away the last lingering remnants of grief.

There was no grief left. Only cold, razor-sharp clarity.

Lucian stepped into the stateroom, holding a fresh cup of coffee. He glanced at the monitor, where Vance’s operatives were already packing up their equipment and heading back toward the service elevator.

“They found out about Claire,” Serena said quietly, not looking up from the screen.

“They won't find her,” Lucian assured her, setting the coffee down on the desk. “My security teams relocated Claire and her family to a safehouse in Westchester twenty minutes after you stepped onto the tender. They are entirely out of reach.”

Serena looked up at Lucian. “And Nolan?”

“He made his choices,” Lucian said simply. “Vance’s cleaners are sanitizing the penthouse now. By morning, the police will rule it a botched robbery by international art thieves. Nolan’s corporate assets will be frozen by federal investigators looking into the shell companies, leaving Vanessa with nothing.”

A grim smile touched the corner of Serena’s mouth. “Good. She wanted my diamond earrings so badly; let her explain to the bankruptcy court how she acquired them.”

“Now comes the difficult part,” Lucian said, pulling up a secondary display on the desk console. A complex network map of financial nodes, server farms, and corporate headquarters lit up the screen in cascading green code. “Nolan’s divorce decree triggered the master archive. The data is currently routing through three hidden proxy servers before landing in our secure storage here on The Sovereign. But Marcus Vance knows where the physical backup is located.”

“Where?”

“Your father’s old estate in Newport, Rhode Island,” Lucian said. “The Ashford Manor. It has been boarded up and abandoned for eight years. Vance’s private army is mobilizing right now to secure the property before sunrise. They believe the original hard drives containing the master decryption keys are still buried in the basement vault.”

Serena stood up from the desk, straightening the cuffs of her sweater. The woman who had stood trembling in the rain outside the Manhattan courthouse three hours ago was gone. In her place stood Marcus Ashford’s true heir.

“Then we beat them to Newport,” Serena said.

Lucian looked at her, his dark eyes gleaming with approval. “The yacht can make Rhode Island waters by midnight. But Newport is a hostile zone, Serena. Vance has local harbor police on his payroll, and his private security forces outnumber us three to one.”

“My father taught me how to open that vault when I was fourteen years old,” Serena said, her voice dropping into an absolute, unshakeable register. “And this is my family’s empire. I am not going to let Marcus Vance steal the ashes.”

Lucian nodded slowly. He reached into his coat pocket and placed a heavy, matte-black encrypted satellite phone on the desk.

“Then let us go home,” he said.
