Chapter 10 - The Chapel of LiarsThe chapel doors opened with a sound like judgment.

Every head turned.

Rafael smiled as if he had been waiting for applause.

Matteo’s eyes narrowed.

Clara clutched Serafina tighter.

And Isabella stopped singing.

For one impossible second, she and Lorenzo simply stared at each other across the ruined chapel.

Eight months of grave dirt.

Eight months of silence.

Eight months of prayers neither of them would admit to praying.

Then Isabella whispered, “Lorenzo.”

His name in her voice nearly brought him to his knees.

But Serafina was still in Clara’s arms.

So he stayed standing.

Rafael stepped forward, elegant in a black coat, his grief-performance face replaced by something cleaner and uglier.

“There he is,” Rafael said. “The tragic widower.”

Lorenzo’s eyes never left Isabella.

“Are you hurt?”

She gave the smallest shake of her head.

A lie.

He knew it.

But it meant survive first.

Rafael clapped slowly.

“Touching. Truly. I almost understand why she chose you.”

Matteo moved toward Lorenzo with a fatherly sadness painted on his face.

“You should have stayed away.”

“I was invited,” Lorenzo said.

Rafael laughed.

“You were summoned.”

Clara shifted as Serafina fussed. The baby’s small hand reached toward the sound of Lorenzo’s voice.

He saw it.

So did Isabella.

Her eyes filled.

Lorenzo forced himself not to move too soon.

Rafael gestured to the documents on the table.

“Here is what happens now. You sign over recognition of the child’s custody to the Conti Trust. You confess to instability, criminal negligence, and involvement in the crash. Then you disappear from her legal life.”

Lorenzo looked at Matteo.

“And you?”

Matteo sighed.

“I tried to teach you that power cannot be inherited by infants and romantic women. This family needed structure.”

“My daughter is structure.”

“Your daughter is leverage,” Matteo snapped.

The room went still.

There it was.

The truth without perfume.

Lorenzo looked at Isabella.

“I am sorry.”

Her face crumpled.

“For what?”

“For believing the grave.”

She shook her head, tears slipping free.

“I thought if I sang loud enough, somehow you would hear me.”

The words went through him like a blade.

Rafael rolled his eyes.

“Enough.”

He grabbed Isabella by the hair and pulled her head back.

Lorenzo moved one step.

Clara lifted Serafina toward one of Rafael’s men.

“Sign,” Rafael said, “or she leaves with him.”

Lorenzo stopped.

The man reached for the baby.

Then something gray flew through the air.

Emma’s rabbit.

It landed at Clara’s feet.

Everyone froze.

From the side entrance, Sophia stepped into the chapel.

Grant’s agents stood hidden behind her in the dark.

Sophia’s face was pale, but her voice did not shake.

“You forgot the maid again.”

Clara stared at her.

“You.”

Sophia looked at Serafina.

“She likes the rabbit.”

Serafina reached downward, crying harder.

Clara, distracted and disgusted, shifted the baby.

That was all Isabella needed.

Bound hands or not, weak or not, she threw her shoulder into Clara’s knees.

Clara screamed and fell sideways, still clutching the child.

Lorenzo crossed the chapel faster than anyone could stop.

Rafael shouted.

Matteo grabbed for a weapon.

Grant’s voice rang from the side.

“Federal agents! Drop it!”

Chaos exploded.

Men shouted. Shoes scraped. Glass broke beneath someone’s heel.

Lorenzo reached Clara as she tried to crawl backward with Serafina. He did not strike her. He did not need to.

He took his daughter from her arms.

The moment Serafina touched him, the chapel vanished again.

She was warm.

Alive.

Solid.

Her little face twisted, furious and frightened, then pressed against his coat as if she knew his heartbeat from another life.

Lorenzo held her with both hands.

“Fina,” he whispered.

Isabella sobbed.

Marco cut her bindings.

She stumbled toward them.

Lorenzo lowered Serafina into her mother’s arms for one second, then wrapped both of them against him.

The three of them folded together beneath the broken stained glass while the chapel filled with arrests, screams, and orders.

Matteo tried to slip through the sacristy door.

Sophia saw him.

“Mr. DeLuca!”

Lorenzo looked up.

Matteo held a gun.

Not at Lorenzo.

At Emma, standing behind Sophia in the doorway.

The old man smiled.

May you like

“You always did have too many weaknesses.”

The shot cracked through the chapel.
