CHAPTER 3: THE LIE THAT COULDN’T STAY BURIED

“Open it!”
Ethan’s voice thundered through the room.
No one stopped him this time.
The mourners parted.
Security stepped aside.
Even they looked terrified.
Ethan grabbed the coffin handle.
Vivian rushed forward.
“No!”
Her scream echoed through the chapel.
“Don’t open it!”
That was all Ethan needed to hear.
With trembling hands, he released the locks.
Click.
Click.
Click.
The room held its breath.
Then Ethan lifted the lid.
Gasps filled the chapel.
Inside lay his father.
Pale.
Weak.
But alive.
A clear plastic tube rested beneath his nose.
His chest moved slowly.
Shallow breaths.
The elderly man opened his eyes.
“Ethan...”
The room erupted.
Several mourners began crying.
Others shouted for an ambulance.
One woman nearly fainted.
Ethan dropped to his knees beside the coffin.
“Dad!”
His father grabbed his hand with surprising strength.
“They tried to silence me.”
The words hit the room like a bomb.
Everyone turned toward Vivian.
She was already backing away.
Terror filled her face.
Because the man she had declared dead was now speaking in front of dozens of witnesses.
And worse...
he was ready to tell the truth.
Police sirens screamed outside.
Red and blue lights flashed through the stained-glass windows.
Vivian’s perfect life.
Her perfect inheritance.
Her perfect lie.
All began collapsing in that single moment.
And as officers rushed through the doors, Ethan finally understood why Vivian had been so desperate to keep the coffin closed.
Because dead men tell no secrets.
But his father wasn’t dead.
And now, neither was the truth.
