Chapter 2 - The Matriarch's Ledger

By 7:00 AM, the hospital room felt like a command center under siege. The local morning news was already running a scrolling banner across the bottom of the screen: “Real Estate Tycoon Grant Mercer Arrested on Felony Domestic Battery Charges.”

The public relation machines of Mercer Global were undoubtedly spinning into overdrive, but the true architect of the Mercer empire didn't send a publicist. She came herself.

The door to my room opened, and Victoria Mercer stepped inside.

At seventy, the matriarch of the family carried herself with the terrifying rigidity of old Chicago money. Her silver hair was pinned back perfectly, her tailored emerald coat pristine, her diamonds catching the harsh fluorescent lights of the ward. She didn't look at my bandages. She didn't look at the IV in my arm. She walked straight to the foot of my bed, placing a sleek leather briefcase on the tray table.

"You've been a very foolish girl, Emily," Victoria said, her voice smooth and chillingly calm, like a judge delivering a predetermined sentence. "Grant is currently sitting in a holding cell because you chose to make a public spectacle of a private marital dispute. Do you have any conception of what this caprice is doing to our family foundation's stock value?"

"Your son dragged me across the floor by my hair, Victoria," I said, my voice steady, matching her icy tone note for note.

"Men of Grant's position live under immense pressure," Victoria replied smoothly, opening the briefcase and sliding a document toward me alongside a gold fountain pen. "He has an volatile temperament, yes. But a loyal wife manages her husband's flaws; she doesn't weaponize them for the police. You will sign this affidavit stating you were highly intoxicated, slipped in the shower, and that Grant used necessary physical force only to restrain you from harming yourself during a hysterical episode."

She leaned closer, the scent of her expensive French perfume mixing unpleasantly with the hospital's antiseptic. "In exchange, a private trust of ten million dollars will be settled upon you. You will quietly relocate to our estate in Scottsdale until the divorce is finalized. If you refuse..." Her eyes narrowed into predatory slits. "We will systematically erase you. We will tie you up in litigation until you are bankrupt, paint you as a unstable extortionist in the press, and ensure you never hold a job in this state again."

I picked up the heavy gold pen. Victoria's lips twitched into a smug, victorious smile, assuming I was the same terrified girl she had spent years looking down upon.

But instead of signing the affidavit, I pressed the pen firmly against the paper and drew a thick, black line straight through her signature.

"I'm not signing your cover-up, Victoria," I said, looking her directly in the eye. "And you should check your tablet. Because while you were driving here, the New York State Attorney General's Office received a digital brief regarding Mercer Global’s 'Clean Waters' Charitable Foundation."

Victoria’s brow furrowed, her aristocratic composure slipping for a fraction of a second. "What nonsense are you talking about?"

"I was a forensic accountant before I married into your family," I said, leaning forward despite the agonizing pull in my ribs. "Did you really think I wouldn't notice the double-entry ledgers on your foundation's tax exemptions? For three years, you and Grant have been using a fake charity to launder kickbacks from city council members for your downtown zoning permits. I mapped every single routing number from Chicago to Grand Cayman."

Right on cue, the phone inside Victoria's designer bag began to ring frantically. She snatched it out, her eyes widening as she read the caller ID: Chief Financial Officer, Mercer Global.

She answered it, pressing it to her ear. I could hear the panicked, breathless voice of her CFO bleeding through the receiver: "Victoria! The feds... the FBI and IRS Criminal Investigation just raided the corporate headquarters! They have a total asset forfeiture warrant! They’ve frozen the primary accounts! They’re saying someone handed them the complete unencrypted master ledger!"

Victoria dropped the phone. It clattered against the metal bed rail, the screen glowing blankly in the dim room. She looked at me, her face pale and hollow, finally seeing the investigator standing behind the bruises.
