CHAPTER 1: THE BOY WITH THE EMPTY PLATE

“Mrs. Lorena… is there food for me too?”

Noah Whitmore’s voice was barely louder than a whisper.

At the long dining table, silver forks clicked softly against porcelain plates. The smell of roasted chicken filled the room. Lorena’s children laughed as they passed warm dishes from one side of the table to the other.

But at the very end sat Noah.

Alone.

An empty plate rested in front of him.

His small hands were folded neatly in his lap, as if being polite might somehow make him less invisible.

Lorena didn't even look at him at first.

Then she slowly turned.

One hand rested on her hip.

Her eyes were cold enough to freeze the entire room.

“Don’t call me just to ask for food.”

The laughter stopped immediately.

Noah lowered his head.

“I cook for my children,” Lorena said sharply.

“Not for strangers.”

The words hung heavily in the air.

No one spoke.

No one moved.

Even Lorena’s own children stared down at their plates.

Noah swallowed hard.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

But Lorena wasn’t finished.

“If you're hungry, wait until your father gets home.”

Her voice became even colder.

“You are not my responsibility.”

A tear rolled down Noah’s cheek.

He quickly wiped it away before anyone could see.

What no one noticed was the man standing in the hallway.

Marcus Whitmore.

He had arrived home early.

A black folder trembled in his hand.

Inside was a truth he had spent weeks trying to verify.

A truth so devastating he could barely accept it himself.

But hearing Lorena humiliate Noah shattered whatever restraint he had left.

Marcus stepped into the dining room.

His face was pale.

His jaw was clenched.

And his eyes burned with anger.

“Then your children shouldn’t be eating either.”

Every head turned.

Lorena froze.

“Marcus?”

He lifted the folder.

“Because I just found out…”

His voice shook.

“None of them are mine.”

The dining room fell silent.

Dead silent.

The world seemed to stop spinning.

And for the first time in years...

Lorena looked afraid.
