Chapter 3 - The Confrontation

When Grandpa and I walked back up into the living room, the atmosphere was thick with resentment. My mother was sitting on the sofa, wiping her eyes with a tissue, while my father stood by the fireplace holding a glass of bourbon.
When Dad saw me carrying my duffel bags, he scoffed, taking a sip from his glass.
"So you're actually running away to hide behind your grandfather?" Dad said, shaking his head. "Unbelievable. After everything your mother and I gave you."
"George," Grandpa said, stepping in front of me. "Where is the twenty-three thousand dollars you took from Ethan’s savings account?"
My mother froze. Her hand stopped midway to her face, her eyes widening in sudden, real terror.
Dad’s posture shifted. He tried to maintain his cold, dismissive grin, but his eyes darted nervously toward the hallway.
"That was for household expenses," Dad stammered. "I put him on my account when he was seventeen. Legally, it's a joint account."
"Legally, it was his hard-earned money," Grandpa snapped. "Where did twenty-three thousand dollars go, George? Because it certainly didn't go into this house."
"Todd had a business opportunity!" Claire shouted, suddenly stepping out of the hallway, her face red. "He needed seed capital for his trucking firm so he could pay off his back child support!"
The living room went dead quiet.
I looked at Claire, then at my father, the horror of the realization settling in my chest.
"You gave my life savings... to Todd?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. "The guy who cheated on you twice? The guy who hasn't paid a cent of child support for his own kids in three years?"
"He's going to pay it back!" Claire screamed defensively. "When his business takes off, he's going to pay Ethan back with interest!"
"He doesn't have a business, Claire!" I yelled, finally losing my composure, tears of pure anger stinging my eyes. "He's a professional scam artist! He's been using you for four years, and Dad just handed him my entire future on a silver platter!"
"That's enough!" Dad shouted, stepping toward me with his finger pointed at my chest. "You live in my house, you follow my rules! You don't speak to your sister like that!"
Grandpa stepped directly between my father and me, placing his hand against Dad’s chest and pushing him back with surprising strength.
"You have twenty-four hours to return every dollar of Ethan's savings, George," Grandpa said, his voice chillingly calm. "Or I will hire the best forensic accountant in the state, file a civil fraud lawsuit against you and Todd, and cut you completely out of my estate."
My father went pale. My grandfather owned a commercial framing business worth millions, alongside three real estate properties. My father had been counting on his inheritance to fund his own retirement.

"Dad... you can't be serious," my father whispered, his voice trembling. "Over a family misunderstanding?"
"It's not a misunderstanding, George," Grandpa said, taking my duffel bag from my hand. "It's theft. And you have until Monday morning to fix it."
