Chapter 6 - The Sound of a Home

Three months later, the autumn rains of Seattle had given way to a crisp, clear October morning.
The Subaru was gone. In its place in the staff parking lot sat a brand-new, reliable hybrid SUV with a red bow taped to the windshield and a polite note on the steering wheel signed simply: J.V.
Inside the nursery wing, the atmosphere had transformed entirely.
The gray soundproofing panels had been replaced with warm, cream-colored acoustic wood. The steel cribs were gone, replaced by low Montessori floor beds draped in colorful quilts.
And on the floor, sitting cross-legged between Leo and Lucas, was Julian Vance.
He wasn't wearing his suit jacket. His sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, his tie was discarded on a nearby chair, and his face was smeared with blue washable paint.
“Dada!” Lucas cheered, holding up a lopsided finger-painting of what vaguely resembled a very angry dinosaur.
Julian took the paper, solemn and deeply focused, as if he were reviewing a billion-dollar merger.
“Masterpiece,” Julian declared gravely, holding it up for inspection. “Elias will frame it in the primary boardroom.”
From the doorway, Elena Rostova leaned against the doorframe, holding a tray of sliced apples and a cup of black coffee. She wore a neat housekeeper’s uniform, her taped-up glasses resting comfortably on her nose, a small, genuine smile playing on her lips.
“You’re going to ruin them, Mr. Vance,” Elena teased softly. “Next thing you know, they’ll be running the corporate finance department by age three.”
Julian looked up, his dark eyes softening as they met hers. He stood up, brushed the paint off his trousers, and walked over to take the coffee cup from her hand.
“Let them run the finance department,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a warm, quiet intimacy that belonged only to her. “As long as they know who taught them how to laugh.”
Downstairs, the front gates opened smoothly, welcoming the ordinary world into a house that was no longer a fortress.
The fourteen nannies were history.

The ghosts of the past had finally been laid to rest.
And in the heart of the Vance estate, the silence of wealth had been permanently replaced by the sweetest sound in the world: the sound of a real family living, breathing, and laughing together.
