Chapter 4 - The Gala and the Threat

The seventy-two-hour trial period officially expired on Thursday at 9:00 AM.

Nia sat in Adrian’s private study, sipping a cup of dark coffee while Adrian read through her typed three-page behavioral assessment of his sons.

The study was quiet, save for the ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner and the rustle of paper as Adrian flipped the page.

"You've restructured their schedule completely," Adrian noted, raising his eyes to look at her over the top of the paper. "Physical training at three, homework at four, structured creative play at six, family dinner at seven-thirty. No screens after eight PM."

"Children thriving on predictability, Mr. Vale," Nia explained. "When children experience a traumatic loss, their sense of safety collapses. Structure gives them an external boundary that makes them feel protected. When you give them unlimited freedom and no boundaries, they interpret it as neglect."

Adrian set the papers down on his desk. He leaned back, crossing his arms over his chest, his gaze intense.

"Marcus Vance told me you ordered him out of my kitchen yesterday," Adrian said softly.

Nia didn't blink. "I did."

"Marcus is a high-ranking manager in my logistics operations," Adrian said, his voice neutral. "He handles sensitive security matters for my firm."

"Marcus is an aggressive man who entered a private residential space without clearance while four young children were present," Nia countered sharply. "He carried a weapon, he used intimidating language, and he frightened your sons. I don't care what his title is in your organization, Mr. Vale. If he steps into that kitchen again while I am on duty, I will have your front gate security remove him."

A slow, genuine smile spread across Adrian’s face—a smile that completely erased the cold, ruthless line of his jaw, making him look years younger.

"I've already revoked his security clearance for the main house," Adrian revealed quietly. "He will not be entering the residential wing again."

He pulled a heavy fountain pen from his suit pocket, signed the bottom of her contract, and slid a leather folder across the desk toward her.

"The full-time contract, Miss Carter," Adrian said. "Two hundred thousand annually, full medical benefits, private quarters, and an unrestricted educational stipend for your sister's medical care in Boston."

Nia froze. She looked up from the contract, her eyes wide with shock. "How do you know about Maya?"

Adrian’s expression softened. "I run a high-level intelligence and logistics network, Nia. Do you really think I would let a woman move into my home with my four sons without running a comprehensive background check? I know about your sister's heart condition. I know about the medical debt. And I know that every penny of your signing bonus was wired directly to Children's Hospital in Boston yesterday morning."

He leaned forward, resting his hands on the mahogany desk.

"You are not just a nanny, Nia," Adrian said softly. "You are the first person in four years who has brought life back into this home. Your sister’s medical bills are fully covered by my private foundation. Focus on my sons. Let me focus on your family."

A wave of overwhelming relief washed over Nia, so powerful her breath caught in her throat. The crushing weight she had carried on her shoulders for six months suddenly evaporated.

"Thank you, Adrian," she whispered, using his first name for the very first time.

"You're welcome, Nia," Adrian replied, his grey eyes lingering on her face with a warmth that sent a subtle shiver down her spine.

He cleared his throat, adjusting his dark tie as he stood up. "Which brings me to my next request. Tomorrow evening is the annual Greenwich Hospital Charity Gala. It is a mandatory public appearance for my firm. I need you to attend."

Nia frowned slightly. "As the boys' nanny?"

"As my guest," Adrian corrected smoothly, stepping around his desk to stand near her chair. "The boys will be under the supervision of our head security officer, Frank, inside the venue's private holding suite. But I require a partner who can help me navigate the social minefield of East Coast high society. And quite frankly... I don't want to go with anyone else."

Nia looked into his eyes. The professional boundaries she had carefully maintained for three days felt dangerously thin in the quiet warmth of the study.

"I don't have a dress for a gala, Mr. Vale," Nia said weakly.

"A stylist will arrive at three o'clock tomorrow afternoon," Adrian smiled softly. "Don't worry about the dress, Nia. Just bring yourself."

The following evening, the grand ballroom of the Bellevue Estate in Greenwich was a sea of velvet, silk, tailored tuxedos, and crystal chandeliers. Five hundred of the most influential figures in New York finance, politics, and real estate mingled over flutes of vintage champagne.

When Adrian Vale entered the ballroom, a quiet hush swept through the room.

Beside him stood Nia Carter.

She wore a breathtaking, floor-length emerald green silk gown that clung perfectly to her elegant silhouette. Her dark hair was styled in intricate, soft curls that cascaded over one shoulder, pinned with a subtle diamond hairpiece. A simple emerald pendant rested against her collarbone.

She looked radiant, commanding, and utterly stunning.

Adrian held out his arm, his gray eyes burning with undisguised admiration as she rested her hand lightly over his forearm.

"You look extraordinary, Nia," Adrian whispered into her ear as they moved into the crowd.

"Thank you," Nia smiled, feeling a blush warm her cheeks. "You don't look so bad yourself, Mr. Vale."

"Adrian," he reminded her softly.

For two hours, they moved through the high-society crowd like a seasoned team. Nia’s sharp intellect, calm grace, and natural warmth captivated investors and politicians alike. Adrian watched her with growing fascination, realizing that this extraordinary woman possessed a strength that matched his own in every single way.

At 10:30 PM, Nia stepped away from the ballroom to check on the boys in the estate’s private VIP lounge on the second floor.

She walked down the quiet carpeted corridor, away from the loud orchestra music below.

As she reached the door of the VIP lounge, a heavy hand grabbed her wrist, yanked her into a dark side hallway, and shoved her against the wall.

Nia instinctively raised her elbow to strike, but her back hit the hard stone paneling as Marcus Vance’s thick frame blocked her exit.

"Well, well," Marcus sneered, his breath smelling heavily of bourbon. He wore a dark tuxedo, his eyes bloodshot and filled with dangerous rage. "Look at the little nanny dressed up like a princess."

"Let go of me, Marcus," Nia commanded, her voice dropping into a cold, lethal register.

"You ruined my position with Adrian," Marcus growled, leaning in closer, his grip tightening on her wrist. "He stripped my warehouse access yesterday because of your mouth. He thinks he's clean now because he's got a pretty new lady on his arm."

Marcus pulled a small, silver folding knife from his jacket, pressing the cold steel edge against the side of Nia’s throat.

"You're going to walk back into that study with me, open Adrian’s private safe on his mobile tablet, and give me the ledger files for the Jersey pier," Marcus whispered maliciously. "Or I'll make sure your sister never leaves that hospital in Boston."

Nia’s eyes narrowed to slits of pure, lethal fire.

"You made a mistake, Marcus," Nia whispered softly.

"Oh yeah? What mistake?"

"You threatened my family," Nia said.

Before Marcus could react, Nia shifted her weight, driving the sharp, narrow heel of her designer shoe directly into Marcus’s instep with blinding speed and force.

Marcus grunted in agony, his grip loosening for a fraction of a second.

Nia didn't hesitate. She grabbed his knife wrist with both hands, twisted it outward with a professional wrist-lock, and drove her knee forcefully into his stomach. Marcus dropped the knife onto the carpet, gasping for air.

Nia snatched the knife off the floor, stepped back, and flipped the blade smoothly into her palm, holding it in a defensive tactical stance.

"Don't move," a cold, terrifying voice echoed from the end of the corridor.

Adrian Vale stood framed in the dim hallway light.

His suit jacket was unbuttoned, his gray eyes dark with a murderous rage that made the temperature in the hallway plummet to freezing. Behind him stood Frank, his head security officer, holding a suppressed firearm aimed squarely at Marcus’s chest.

"Adrian..." Marcus wheezed, clutching his stomach as he stumbled back against the wall. "She... she attacked me..."

Adrian didn't look at Marcus. He walked past him as if he were invisible, stepping directly in front of Nia. He gently took the folding knife from her hand, tossed it to Frank, and took both of Nia’s hands into his own, searching her face for any sign of injury.

"Are you hurt?" Adrian asked, his voice shaking with a rare, terrifying emotion. "Nia, did he touch you?"

"I'm fine, Adrian," Nia said, taking a deep breath as her adrenaline slowly receded. "I took care of it."

Adrian looked at her, his heart hammering against his ribs, realization washing over him like a tidal wave. He wasn't just protective of her because she was his sons' nanny.

He was in love with her.

Adrian turned slowly to face Marcus, his expression devoid of all human mercy.

"Frank," Adrian said quietly. "Take Mr. Vance to the docks in Jersey. Ensure he never sets foot in the state of Connecticut again."

"With pleasure, Boss," Frank replied, grabbing Marcus by the collar and dragging him down the rear service stairs.

Adrian turned back to Nia. He reached out, his warm, strong hand gently cupping her cheek, his thumb softly tracing her cheekbone.

May you like

"I will never let anyone hurt you, Nia," Adrian whispered, his eyes burning with intense devotion. "Never."

Nia leaned her face into his warm palm, looking up into his eyes. "I know, Adrian. I know."
