Chapter 3 - The Price of Silence

Logan sank onto Albert's small sofa, burying his face in his hands. "I didn't know, Dad. I swear, I didn't know you were doing all of that. Chelsea... Chelsea told me she was handling the budget. She said we were doing great."
"And you believed her because it was easier than looking at the numbers yourself," Albert said, sitting in the armchair opposite his son. "You are thirty-four years old, Logan. You are a grown man. But you let your wife treat your father like an embarrassing servant in your own home because you were too afraid of a difficult conversation."
"I'm sorry," Logan choked out, tears escaping through his fingers. "I was so stressed. Chelsea... she has this image she needs to keep up. Her friends, her family... they all expect so much. I thought if I just kept her happy, everything would be okay. I didn't want to make a scene at the dinner party. I thought you would understand."
"I did understand," Albert said softly. "I understood that my presence was a currency you were willing to spend to buy your wife's temporary approval. You let her serve me in the corner on Thanksgiving. You let her tell me to use the back door. And on Monday, you let her banish me to my room because my presence 'embarrassed' her in front of your coworkers."
"Dad, please," Logan pleaded, looking up, his face stained with tears. "I made a mistake. A horrible mistake. Just... help us. Please. If you don't co-sign again, we lose the house. We lose the car. Chelsea is hysterical. She’s threatening to leave me."
Albert looked at his son, his heart aching. He loved Logan. He had always loved him. But true love didn't mean continuing to fund a slow, financial suicide.
"If she leaves you because you don't have a luxury car and a house you can't afford, Logan, then she never loved you in the first place," Albert said. "I have nearly eight hundred thousand dollars in savings, Logan."
Logan’s head snapped up, his eyes widening in absolute shock. "Eight... eight hundred thousand?"
"Yes," Albert nodded. "I saved it over a lifetime of careful investing and disciplined living. My dream was to leave it all to you. I wanted to hand you a legacy that would ensure your future. But legacy isn't just money, Logan. It's character. And right now, if I gave you that money, it would destroy you. It would buy Chelsea’s affection for a few more years, and then you would both be broke and miserable."
Albert stood up, walking to the window overlooking the quiet Sacramento street.
"I will not sign the papers, Logan. The house will go into foreclosure. The car will be repossessed. You will have to look at the numbers, and you will have to face the truth."

"Dad, you can't do this to us!" Logan cried, his voice desperate.
"I'm not doing this to you, son," Albert said, turning back with a look of profound, sorrowful love. "I am doing this for you."
