Chapter 2 - The Serpent in the Cradle

The basement study of the Moretti estate was soundproofed, built with reinforced steel walls behind dark mahogany panels. It was where Adrien conducted the business he kept hidden from the civilized world.
Victoria Sterling sat in a leather armchair across from Adrien’s massive oak desk. She was thirty-two, polished, wearing an expensive silk blouse and a gold Rolex on her left wrist. She was trying to look offended, but the sweat glistening at her hairline betrayed her.
"Adrien, this is outrage!" Victoria snapped, crossing her legs. "Your thugs dragged me out of my bedroom! I am your dead wife's sister! I have done nothing but support you since Sarah passed away!"
Adrien sat behind his desk. He didn't speak. He simply pulled the black metallic cylinder out of his pocket and set it softly on the green blotter between them.
Beside it, he placed the sliced cloth doll.
Victoria’s eyes flickered down to the object. Just for a fraction of a second, her pupils dilated.
"Do you know what this is, Victoria?" Adrien asked smoothly.
"It looks like trash," she said, looking away. "Why are you showing me broken toys while your children are screaming upstairs?"
"They aren't screaming anymore," Adrien replied. "They stopped the moment this was removed from the nursery."
He leaned forward, resting his forearms on the desk. "It’s a subsonic acoustic emitter, model LRAD-3. It’s manufactured by a defense contractor in Switzerland. It costs eighty thousand dollars on the black market. It emits sound frequencies between 14 and 19 Hertz. Adults feel a mild sense of unease. Infants experience agonizing sinus pressure and severe psychological panic."
Victoria swallowed hard. "What does that have to do with me?"
"You gave it to Sophie," Adrien said. "The maid’s four-year-old daughter. You told her it was a magic toy that would sing the babies to sleep. You used an innocent child to deliver a torture device into my home every night at eight o'clock."
"That’s a lie!" Victoria stood up, her voice screeching. "You’re listening to the daughter of a servant over me?! The girl is confused! She’s making things up!"
The heavy oak door of the study swung open.
Marco walked in, holding a tablet. "Boss. We checked Victoria’s private quarters. We found two more acoustic units in her safe, along with an encrypted satellite phone."
Victoria froze. The color drained entirely from her face.
"Why, Victoria?" Adrien asked, his voice dangerously soft. "Sarah loved you. I gave you a home here after she died. I gave you an allowance. Why torturing my children?"
"Your children?!" Victoria suddenly burst out, her composure completely shattering into ugly, bitter rage. "Those bastards took everything from me! Sarah’s trust fund was supposed to revert to me if she died without heirs! But she had those three wretched monsters! Fifty million dollars, locked away in a trust for infants while I have to ask you for pocket money!"
She stepped toward the desk, her eyes wild. "If they were declared medically unstable—if they suffered from severe, untreatable psychological trauma—the court would have declared you an unfit single parent! I would have been named their guardian! I would have controlled the money!"
Adrien stared at her. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't even stand up. The sheer evil of her plan—slowly driving three infants insane with invisible pain just to gain access to a trust fund—was a level of sickness even he, a mob boss, found vile.
"You didn't act alone," Adrien stated. "An acoustic emitter of this grade requires military clearance. Who bought it for you?"
Victoria sneered. "Find out yourself, Adrien. You think you're untouchable because you're the head of the Moretti family? There are people in this city who want your territory. And they know your children are your only weakness."
Adrien looked at Marco.
"Take her to the secondary holding facility in Newark," Adrien commanded. "Don't kill her. Not yet. I want to know every name on that satellite phone."
"No! Adrien, wait! You can't do this to me! I'm Sarah's sister!" Victoria screamed as Marco grabbed her arm, dragging her backward out of the room. "You can't prove anything! You're a monster!"
The door clicked shut. Silence returned to the study.
Adrien sat alone in the dim light. He looked at his hands. For all his power, his money, his guards, and his intelligence, he had been completely blind. He had let a snake sleep under his roof while his children suffered in silence.

And the only person who had stopped it was a quiet four-year-old girl in a washed-out cotton dress.
He stood up, picked up the broken cloth doll, and walked back upstairs toward the nursery.
