Chapter 5 - Absolute Reckoning

The court room of the New Jersey Superior Court was quiet as Judge Eleanor Vance took the bench on Friday morning.

Adrian sat at the plaintiff’s table alongside his attorney, a greasy man named Miller who kept nervously shuffling through disorganized stacks of paper. Adrian looked haggard; his tailored suit was unpressed, dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes, and the arrogant swagger he had displayed at the airport was completely gone.

I sat at the defense table next to Julian Thorne, dressed in a sleek charcoal navy suit, calm and composed.

“We are here in the matter of Cole v. Cole,” Judge Vance announced, her voice echoing in the mahogany-paneled room. “Plaintiff is seeking an emergency injunction to freeze the assets of the Estate of Margaret Cole and invalidate the Last Will and Testament executed six months prior to her death. Counsel for the plaintiff, state your grounds.”

Attorney Miller stood up, clearing his throat loudly. “Your Honor, my client, Adrian Cole, is the sole biological child of the deceased. For three years, while Mr. Cole was executing vital international business commitments in London, the defendant, Rebecca Cole, systematically isolated Mrs. Margaret Cole, who suffered from severe dementia. We contend that the defendant exercised undue influence over a vulnerable elderly individual to usurp the biological heir’s rightful inheritance!”

Judge Vance turned her sharp gaze toward Julian. “Mr. Thorne?”

Julian stood up smoothly, unbuttoning his suit jacket with effortless grace. “Your Honor, the plaintiff’s claim is not only meritless; it is a bad-faith effort to conceal criminal conduct.”

Adrian flinched visibly at the word criminal.

“We submit into evidence Exhibit A,” Julian continued, handing a tablet to the court clerk. “A high-definition video deposition recorded six months ago, overseen by board-certified neurologist Dr. Robert Vance and veteran attorney Arthur Harrison. In this recording, Margaret Cole explicitly details her complete mental clarity, her full understanding of her assets, and her deliberate decision to disinherit her son.”

Julian paused, letting the weight of the statement settle before striking the final blow.

“Furthermore, we submit Exhibit B: forensic financial records showing that three years ago, Mr. Adrian Cole attempted to forge his mother’s signature to place a seven-hundred-thousand-dollar secondary mortgage on her residence to fund failed speculative investments in London. It was this attempted fraud that prompted Mrs. Cole to revoke his power of attorney long before her cognitive health declined.”

Judge Vance’s eyebrows rose. She looked down at the financial documents provided by Julian, her expression darkening by the second. She flipped through the forensic accounting pages, then looked up directly at Adrian.

“Mr. Miller,” Judge Vance said, her voice dripping with ice. “Did your client inform you of this prior attempted transaction on the estate property?”

Miller stammered, looking frantically at Adrian. “Uh... Your Honor... my client maintains that...”

“Silence,” Judge Vance commanded.

She slammed her gavel down with a sharp, decisive crack that echoed through the courtroom.

“The motion for an injunction is denied with prejudice,” Judge Vance ruled sternly. “The Last Will and Testament of Margaret Cole is affirmed as entirely valid and legally binding. Furthermore, given the clear evidence of attempted mortgage fraud submitted today, this court is referring Mr. Adrian Cole’s financial records to the County Prosecutor’s Office for formal criminal investigation.”

Adrian slumped forward in his chair, burying his face in his trembling hands. Miller immediately began packing his briefcase, eager to distance himself from his client.

Julian turned to me with a warm smile. “It’s completely over, Rebecca. You are free.”

I took a deep breath, feeling a three-year weight lift off my shoulders entirely. As we walked out of the courtroom, Adrian stumbled after us into the marble hallway.

“Rebecca... please!” Adrian gasped, his voice cracking with desperation. “They’re going to prosecute me! I have nothing left! Olivia took Noah and went back to her family in England! The bank seized my accounts! Please... just give me fifty thousand dollars so I can pay my legal fees! You have the house... you have everything!”

I stopped and turned to look at the man I had once pledged my life to. There was no hatred left in my heart for him—only profound pity for a man who had traded love, loyalty, and family for cheap illusions of wealth.

“You said it yourself at the airport, Adrian,” I replied quietly, looking him straight in the eyes. “You told me to start over. Now it’s your turn.”

Without waiting for his reply, I walked down the courthouse steps into the bright afternoon sunlight alongside Julian.
