Chapter 3 - The Inheritance of Shadows

Dr. Vance slumped out of my grip, sliding down the mahogany bookcase until he hit the floor, gasping for air and clutching his chest. Emma stood frozen by the desk, her hands covering her mouth as the horrifying truth of the Carter dynasty settled over the room like radioactive fallout.
I didn't look at the doctor. I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking New York Harbor.
Outside, the late afternoon sun was turning the slate-gray water into a sheet of liquid copper. Cargo ships drifted silently toward the Verrazzano-Nieuw Amsterdam Bridge, their distant foghorns sending low, mournful vibrations through the air that I now felt not just in my bones, but in my mind.
For thirty-seven years, I had ruled this city from the shadows. I had crushed competitors, acquired failing conglomerates, and fired executives with a single stroke of a pen, believing my detachment was a sign of superior intellect. I thought my deafness had forged me into an apex predator.
Now I knew the truth. I wasn't a predator. I was a manufactured weapon, kept in a sensory deprivation chamber so I wouldn't feel the weight of the lives I was destroying.
"Get up, Julian," I said, not turning around.
From the floor, Dr. Vance let out a shaky groan, pushing himself up against the bookshelf. "What... what are you going to do? Have me arrested? If this goes public, Carter Global’s stock will plummet. The board will tear the company apart. Your father’s legacy—"
"My father's legacy is a prison," I interrupted, turning slowly to face him. My expression was flat, devoid of the rage that had boiled over a moment ago. The businessman had returned, colder and sharper than ever. "You’re not going to jail today, Julian. Going to jail is too easy. It gives you a trial, a headline, and a clean narrative."
Dr. Vance blinked, wiping sweat from his forehead with a trembling handkerchief. "Then... what do you want?"
"I want the keys to the kingdom," I said quietly. "Every medical file, every financial ledger, every secret recording or communication between you and my father regarding my condition. I want every document stored in the Manhattan Neurological Institute’s private vault delivered to this study by midnight. If even one page is missing, I won't call the police. I’ll hand you over to the federal prosecutors on charges of medical fraud, conspiracy, and human rights violations that will ensure you die under a prison mattress."
Dr. Vance swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward the door as if calculating his odds of survival. He knew he had no escape. The Carter empire was vast, but my wrath would be absolute.
"I'll... I'll have the archive transferred," he whispered hoarsely, scrambling to pick up his leather case. He didn't look back as he hurried out of the study, the heavy oak door slamming shut behind him with a finality that echoed like a gunshot.
When the sound of his footsteps faded into the subterranean garage, the study fell quiet again.
Emma exhaled a long, shaky breath, her legs finally giving out as she sank into the wingback chair. "Mr. Carter... what are you going to do now?"

I looked down at my desk, where the small silicone plug still rested on the napkin like a dark, ugly seed.
"Now, Emma," I said, my voice cutting through the silence of the room with terrifying clarity, "we find out who else knew."
