Chapter 3 - The Audit and the Trap

By mid-week, Daniel was desperate. The stop-work order on the Meridian Towers was costing him $150,000 a day in penalties, and his lenders were beginning to circle like sharks smelling blood in the water.
That was when Diane Vance delivered the crushing blow. We filed a formal petition with the state court for an emergency ex-parte forensic audit of Vanguard Developments, accompanying it with a comprehensive 200-page dossier detailing the physical abuse I had suffered. We attached the medical logs, the trauma nurse’s photographs, and the audio recordings of the night I left.
In a public relations nightmare that Daniel never saw coming, the local news outlets picked up the story within hours. The headlines were savage: Luxury Developer Accused of Brutal Domestic Assault as Multi-Million Dollar Municipal Project Grinds to a Halt.
Daniel's board of directors panicked. They voted unanimously to strip Daniel of his operational authority temporarily, appointing a court-ordered receiver to oversee the company's financials until the allegations were resolved.
That receiver was none other than Arthur Pendelton—a retired forensic accountant who happened to be an old colleague of my father's.
"He's going to find the shell company," Vanessa panicked, cornering Daniel in the living room of their estate that evening. Our audio feed caught every word. "Daniel, the receiver is looking into the material invoices from 'Apex Supply LLC.' That's the company we used to route the fifteen percent overcharges. If they look at the tax identification numbers, they'll see it’s registered to my sister's apartment!"
"Then delete the records!" Daniel yelled, his voice sounding raspy, broken by days of sleeplessness and heavy drinking. "You're the CFO's assistant, Vanessa! You have the system access codes. Go into the mainframe tonight and wipe the vendor ledger for Apex Supply!"
"I can't!" she sobbed. "The receiver has already locked down the servers. The only way to do it is from the physical terminal inside the corporate headquarters, using the master administrative override key."
"Then we go tonight," Daniel said, his tone turning chillingly cold. "We go at midnight. We wipe the records, we take whatever cash reserves are left in the operating accounts, and we get out of the country. I still have the private charter plane registered under my brother's name."
In the safe house, I stood up, smoothing down the front of my tailored silk trousers. The bruises on my face had faded to a light yellow, hidden beneath a light layer of makeup. I looked healthy, sharp, and entirely composed.

"Are you ready, Evelyn?" my father asked, standing beside me, offering his arm.
"I've been ready for three years, Dad," I replied, taking his arm. "Let's go watch him sign his own warrant."
