Chapter 4 - The Truth Unmasked

The scandal erupted three weeks later, rocking the financial district of Columbus and making headlines across regional business journals. Preston did not attempt to cover up his mother's actions; instead, he initiated a full forensic audit of Callahan Development's off-book accounts.
The audit revealed a complex web of financial manipulation managed by Eleanor Callahan. Five years earlier, she had misappropriated two million dollars from an offshore development fund to pay off third-party intermediaries, create non-disclosure frameworks, and purchase silence from a corrupt administrator at the Chicago clinic who had provided falsified health reports to Preston. Eleanor had weaponized the legal system to isolate me, ensuring I felt utterly abandoned so I would disappear without fighting back.
A formal board meeting was called on a rainy Thursday afternoon. The grand board room on the forty-fifth floor was packed with major shareholders, legal representatives, and press representatives gathered outside the glass doors.
Eleanor sat at the head of the long conference table, her expression mask-like, cold, and rigid. "This internal audit is a personal vendetta led by my son, who is currently undergoing a personal crisis," Eleanor declared to the board, her voice dripping with calculated authority. "It has no bearing on the financial health of Callahan Development."
Preston stood up from his chair at the opposite end of the table. He looked composed, strong, and entirely transformed from the broken man I had met in the mall weeks earlier. He placed a thick leather binder in the center of the table.
"It has everything to do with the integrity of this company, Mother," Preston said clearly. "Five years ago, you committed wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and falsification of records to remove Caroline Whitmore and my unborn children from my life. You used corporate funds to execute personal extortion."
"You are throwing away your future for a woman who washed her hands of you!" Eleanor snapped, her aristocratic facade finally cracking in front of the board members.

"No," Preston replied, turning to face the board of directors. "I am stepping down as Chief Executive Officer effective immediately. And as majority shareholder of my father's trust, I am voting to remove Eleanor Callahan from the board for gross financial misconduct."
The room erupted into quiet gasps and hushed, panicked murmurs. Eleanor turned pale, realizing in an instant that her desperate attempt to secure the family dynasty had permanently shattered it. Preston walked out of the boardroom without looking back, leaving behind the title, the status, and the fortune that had once cost him his family.
