Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Execution

At 9:30 AM the following morning, the glass-and-steel headquarters of Vance Dynamics in Boston's financial district was buzzing with nervous energy.

Jasper stood in his top-floor corner office, adjusting his silk tie in the mirror for the tenth time. His face was pale, dark circles beneath his eyes evidence of a sleepless night. He had called my phone forty-seven times between midnight and six in the morning. Every single call had gone straight to a recorded message stating that the line had been disconnected.

He had even driven back to the high-rise lobby at two in the morning, demanding to see security footage, only to be told by the building manager that my personal team had cleared out my belongings under the protection of a court order signed by a senior federal judge.

"Jasper! Pull yourself together!" Gillian scolded, adjusting the lapels of her jacket as she sat on his office sofa. "She's just trying to intimidate you! So what if her father has a large company? You are the CEO of Vance Dynamics! You hold the patents! You hold the power!"

"You don't understand, Mom!" Jasper snapped, his voice high-pitched and frantic. "Apex Horizon—our primary investor—is scheduled to arrive in fifteen minutes! If Hailey's father knows people in high finance, he could try to ruin our reputation!"

"He can't ruin anything," Priscilla insisted, sipping an iced latte. "You have a legal contract with Apex. They can't just pull fifteen million dollars out of thin air."

Before Jasper could reply, his executive assistant burst into the office without knocking.

"Mr. Vance!" the assistant gasped, out of breath. "The executive delegation from Apex Horizon has just entered the building. But... but they aren't alone."

"What do you mean they aren't alone?" Jasper demanded, straightening his suit coat.

"There are eight corporate attorneys with them, sir. And... and the Chief Executive Officer of Robertson Global is leading the group."

Jasper’s breath hitched in his throat.

Two minutes later, the heavy double doors of the main conference room swung open.

Jasper, Gillian, and Priscilla stood at one end of the long marble conference table. Jasper tried to assume a commanding posture, resting his hands flat on the polished stone, but his knees were visibly shaking.

The door opened, and a line of sharp, dark-suited attorneys entered, taking seats along the left side of the table. Behind them stepped Mr. Henderson, holding a heavy leather briefcase.

And then, walking calmly into the room, was my father, Finnley Robertson.

He radiated an aura of raw, unyielding power that instantly made the room feel small. He didn't look at Gillian, nor at Priscilla. His sharp blue eyes locked directly onto Jasper with the terrifying intensity of an apex predator observing its prey.

Beside my father... stepped me.

I wore an ivory tailored suit, my hair styled in an elegant chignon, walking with calm, posture. Though my body was still recovering, the pain was gone, replaced by an absolute, icy composure. Behind me, a private nurse pushed a state-of-the-art velvet stroller containing little Toby.

Jasper’s jaw dropped open. He stared at me as if looking at a ghost.

"Hailey?" Jasper choked out, taking a step forward. "Hailey... what is the meaning of this? Why are you here with these people? And why did you bring the baby to my corporate headquarters?"

Gillian stood up, her face twisted in rage. "Hailey! How dare you pull a stunt like this! Jasper is in the middle of a crucial investment meeting! Take that child and get out of here!"

My father didn't even glance at Gillian. He simply raised a single finger.

Two broad-shouldered security officers stepped forward, positioning themselves directly behind Gillian and Priscilla, silently commanding them to sit back down. Gillian gasped, slamming her mouth shut in shock.

My father walked to the head of the conference table, pulling out the main leather executive chair and taking a seat. I sat directly to his right.

"Jasper Vance," my father said, his deep, baritone voice cutting through the silent room like a razor blade. "You have been expecting Mr. Sterling from Apex Horizon to approve your Q3 funding milestone of fifteen million dollars."

"Yes!" Jasper said quickly, trying to sound professional. "We have met all software requirements, Mr. Robertson. I don't know why you are here, but business is business. Apex Horizon is legally bound to release the funds upon verification."

My father looked at Mr. Henderson.

Mr. Henderson opened his briefcase, pulling out a thick set of legal contracts and sliding them across the table toward Jasper.

"Read page forty-two, Mr. Vance," Mr. Henderson said calmly.

Jasper picked up the document, his eyes darting across the legal jargon. Suddenly, his hands froze. His face went entirely gray.

"Apex Horizon..." Jasper whispered, reading the text aloud in horror. "Apex Horizon is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Hailey Robertson Revocable Trust."

Jasper dropped the papers as if they had caught fire. He looked at me, his eyes wide with absolute, terrifying shock.

"You..." Jasper stammered, pointing a shaking finger at me. "You... are Apex Horizon?"

"Every dollar that built this office, Jasper," I said, my voice smooth, quiet, and completely deadly. "Every salary you paid, every piece of equipment you bought, and every luxury suit you wore over the last six months... was paid for by my trust fund."
