Chapter 4 - The Airport Confrontation

The San Antonio International Airport parking garage was damp and echoed with the sounds of screeching tires and distant flight announcements.
Margaret Morgan stood beside her silver sedan on level three, pulling a heavy suitcase from the trunk. She wore her beige trench coat, her hair impeccably styled, looking every bit the respectable suburban matriarch—until she turned and saw Daniel standing ten feet away in the dim fluorescent light.
She froze. Her hand lingered on the handle of her suitcase.
“Daniel,” she said, smoothing her coat with an air of practiced calm. “What are you doing here? You should be at the hospital with your wife.”
Daniel walked toward her slowly. The distance between them felt like an abyss.
“You were running, Mom,” Daniel said quietly.
“I am taking a much-needed vacation,” Margaret replied, lifting her chin defensively. “The stress of your little family drama has been entirely too much for my blood pressure. Perhaps once Rachel learns to appreciate what’s good for her, I’ll return.”
“She knows everything,” Daniel said.
Margaret’s eyes flickered with a sudden, sharp panic, though she quickly masked it. “Knows what? That she’s ungrateful? That she couldn't even handle a simple pregnancy without falling apart?”
“She knows about the chemical burns, Mom,” Daniel said, his voice trembling with suppressed fury. “She told the doctors how you held her down and forced her legs into that toxic solution. She told them how you threatened her with ruin if she ever told me.”
Margaret let out a short, cold laugh, stepping around the open trunk. “And you believe her? Over your own mother? A girl from the streets who trapped you with a baby? I was protecting our family name, Daniel! I was saving you from a cripple!”
“Stop calling her that!” Daniel shouted, the echo bouncing off the concrete pillars.
Before Margaret could retort, heavy footsteps echoed from the ramp behind her. Detective Vance and two uniformed officers stepped out of the shadows, their badges gleaming under the lights.
“Margaret Morgan?” Detective Vance asked, stepping forward with a pair of steel cuffs in his hand. “You are under arrest for aggravated assault resulting in severe bodily injury and unlawful confinement.”
Margaret’s face turned the color of ash. She lunged backward, grabbing for her car door, but Vance was faster. He caught her arm, spinning her around and pressing her against the side of her sedan with practiced efficiency.
“Get your hands off me!” Margaret shrieked, her aristocratic composure completely shattering as the cold metal cuffs clicked around her wrists. “You can't do this! I am a pillar of this community! My son—Daniel, tell them! Tell them your mother didn't do this!”
Daniel stood motionless, watching the woman who had raised him—the woman who had hidden cruelty behind a smile—being led away in handcuffs toward the elevators.

He didn't say a word. He didn't offer a defense.
When the elevator doors closed behind them, the garage fell quiet again, save for the hum of the overhead lights.
