Chapter 9 - The Final Encounter

A month later, the annual Chicago Development Gala was held at the historic Drake Hotel. It was the premier event of the season, and every major player in the city was in attendance.
Daniel arrived early, looking impeccably handsome in a classic tuxedo. Walking beside him as his official corporate guest was Maria, radiant in an elegant emerald silk gown, her presence commanding respect from every senator and CEO who approached their table.
Near the champagne fountain, Victoria Langston stood with her mother, looking pale and noticeably diminished. The Langston firm had suffered a massive public relations hit after news broke of their refusal to support an inner-city children's academy. When Victoria saw Daniel and Maria approaching, her face twisted with a bitter, defensive arrogance.
"Well, Daniel," Victoria said, stepping into their path, her voice dripping with venom. "I see you’re still playing the savior. I suppose you brought your little maid as a trophy to prove how progressive you are."
Daniel stopped, looking down at his former fiancée with a cold, detached pity. "Victoria, you still don't get it. Maria isn't a trophy. She's the Director of Corporate Services for an empire that just out-valued your father's firm by two hundred million dollars."
Maria stepped forward, her posture perfect, looking Victoria directly in the eye.

"And Miss Langston?" Maria said softly, her voice smooth and entirely devoid of malice. "The next time you see a little girl in a cheap, faded yellow dress... you should look closer. Because that little girl might just grow up to run the company that buys out your family's estate."
Victoria stumbled backward, completely speechless, as Daniel and Maria turned their backs, walking into the bright, cheering crowd of the main ballroom.
