Chapter 4 - LESSONS IN THE DARK

The library of the Moretti Estate was lined with two stories of mahogany bookshelves, filled with old leather-bound volumes, legal archives, and architectural encyclopedias. A roaring fire crackled in the massive stone fireplace, throwing warm golden light across the leather armchairs and polished oak floor.

It was eight o'clock in the evening.

Lily sat at a long wooden table near the fire, a stack of ASL instructional flashcards and reference books spread before her. She had changed into a warm knitted sweater and dark jeans provided by the estate staff.

Across the table sat Adrian.

He had discarded his jacket and tie, wearing an unbuttoned black shirt with the sleeves rolled up. He sat straight, his dark brows pulled together in intense concentration as he practiced moving his fingers.

"No, tighten your thumb," Lily instructed gently, leaning across the table to touch his broad hand. "If you leave your thumb loose like that, 'mother' becomes 'uncle.' You don't want to tell Sofia you love your uncle."

Adrian adjusted his grip, his large fingers moving with meticulous care. He signed the sequence again: I-T-I-S-L-A-T-E. Y-O-U-S-H-O-U-L-D-R-E-S-T.

Lily smiled warmly. "Very good! Your fingerspelling is getting much faster."

Adrian leaned back in his leather chair, rubbing his eyes with his hand. "It feels like learning a whole new architecture of thought."

"It is," Lily said softly, packing away a set of cards. "Hearing people use words as sound waves. Deaf people use space, speed, and expression. You don't just speak with your hands, Adrian—you speak with your face, your shoulders, your eyes."

Adrian stared at her through the warm firelight. "Show me."

"Show you what?"

"Show me how to say something complex," Adrian murmured, his hazel eyes fixing onto hers with intense curiosity. "Show me how to sign something you wouldn't say out loud."

Lily's heart skipped a beat. She looked down at the wooden table, feeling the gentle heat of the fire against her skin.

She raised her hands slowly into the soft light between them. Her movements were deliberate, elegant, and filled with deep emotion:

I was terrified when I walked into your restaurant last night. I thought you would kill me. But when I looked at you, I saw a man who was completely alone in his own castle.

Adrian watched her hands move like fluid silk through the air. He didn't know every sign, but he recognized terrified, castle, and alone.

"What did you say?" he asked, his voice dropping into a quiet velvet whisper.

"I said... that sign language takes time," Lily lied softly, a faint blush creeping up her neck.

Adrian chuckled—a rich, deep sound that warmed the cold room. He stood up from his chair, walked around the table, and stopped right beside her chair.

He leaned down, placing one heavy palm on the armrest of her chair, bringing his face close to hers.

"You're a terrible liar, Lily Carter," Adrian murmured gently.

Lily held her breath, looking up into his dark, handsome face. "I'm a temp waitress, Adrian. I'm not supposed to have opinions about mob bosses."

"Don't call yourself that," Adrian said, his tone turning sharp and fierce. "You are more intelligent, more brave, and more honest than any aristocrat in this city. My sister loves you. And I..."

He paused, his hazel eyes softening as he searched her face.

"...I haven't been able to think about anything else since you sat down at my table," he finished softly.

He reached out, his large, warm hand gently cupping her jaw, his thumb stroking her cheekbone. Lily leaned into his touch instinctively, her eyes fluttering shut as a shiver of warmth rushed down her spine.

"Adrian..." she whispered.

Before he could answer, the heavy mahogany doors of the library burst open.

Dominic rushed into the room, his white shirt stained with dirt, his face bruised and bleeding from a sharp cut over his left eyebrow.

Adrian straightened up instantly, his gentle aura vanishing as the Iron Capo took over in a fraction of a second.

"Dominic! What happened?!" Adrian barked, stepping between Lily and the door.

"Boss..." Dominic gasped, holding his ribs. "It was a trap... Donato Valenti... he didn't pull back to his harbor..."

May you like

"Where is Sofia?" Adrian demanded, his voice dropping into a lethal growl.

Dominic looked at the floor, his eyes filled with sheer terror. "She went to inspect the St. Jude foundation vaults with two security guards at seven PM... Valenti’s men ambushed the rear entrance. They took her, boss. They took Miss Sofia."
