Chapter 4 - THE VIP SOCIETY SNAKES

Three weeks passed, and Emma’s recovery was nothing short of remarkable.
The grand Vance Estate, which had once been a silent, gloomy fortress filled with armed guards and formal protocol, had been completely transformed.
Laughter now echoed through the high-ceilinged marble hallways. The smell of fresh vanilla bean, lemon zest, and warm brioche filled the grand kitchen every morning as Emma taught Sophie how to bake French pastries. Under Emma’s patient guidance, Sophie’s sign language vocabulary expanded exponentially, and the little girl’s confidence blossomed into radiant, joyful energy.
And then there was Julian.
The ruthless mafia king, who usually spent eighteen hours a day managing his vast illegal and legal empires from his Manhattan headquarters, was suddenly home every evening by six o'clock.
He sat at the long mahogany dining table, ignoring urgent phone calls from syndicate bosses, just to watch Emma sign jokes to his daughter across the table. He bought Emma custom-tailored silk dresses that celebrated her lush, voluptuous curves, ignoring the traditional dark attire of his household. He watched her with a silent, hungry intensity that made Emma’s skin tingle whenever they were in the same room.
However, the high society of New York’s underworld did not take kindly to the former baker’s presence.
On a rainy Thursday evening, the Vance Syndicate hosted its annual Winter Charity Gala at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan—an event designed to wash mafia money through legitimate medical foundations. Every major family, corrupt politician, and elite socialite in the state was in attendance.
In the master dressing suite of the estate, Emma stood before a floor-to-ceiling mirror, her heart pounding against her ribs.
She was wearing a custom-designed midnight-blue velvet ballgown. The dress hugged her full waist, cascading gracefully over her broad hips, while the off-the-shoulder sweetheart neckline showcased her soft collarbones and the light, fading pink scar on her left shoulder. Around her neck rested a breathtaking forty-carat sapphire necklace that Julian had personally placed there an hour earlier.
The door opened, and Julian stepped inside.
He wore a bespoke black tuxedo with a dark blue silk pocket square that matched her gown perfectly. He stopped in his tracks, his charcoal eyes burning as he looked at her.
He crossed the room slowly, his heavy steps silent against the Persian rug. He stopped right behind her, his large, warm hands coming to rest on her soft, velvet-draped hips.
Emma’s breath hitched as she looked at their reflection in the mirror—the broad, dangerous mob king wrapped around her lush, soft frame.
“You look like a goddess,” Julian growled softly against her ear, his lips brushing against her neck, making her shiver violently.
“Julian... I’m nervous,” Emma admitted softly, placing her hands over his on her hips. “These people... they are billionaires, old-money elite, syndicate royalty. I’m just a girl who used to wake up at 4 AM to bake bread. I don't belong in their world.”
Julian turned her around in his arms, his thumb coming up to firmly lift her chin until her hazel eyes met his fiery gaze.
“Listen to me, Emma,” Julian said, his voice echoing with absolute, terrifying conviction. “You belong wherever I put you. Those people out there? They are snakes wearing diamond necklaces. You have more courage, beauty, and honor in your pinky finger than the entire ballroom combined. If anyone makes you feel small tonight... you tell me. And I will ruin them.”
He leaned down and kissed her—a deep, possessive, intoxicating kiss that left Emma breathless and clinging to his tuxedo lapels.
An hour later, the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was buzzing with light, classical music, and clinking champagne flutes.
As Julian and Emma stepped onto the grand balcony overlooking the ballroom, a sudden hush fell over the crowd.
Photographers' flashes exploded like starlight. The feared head of the Vance Syndicate had arrived—and for the first time in seven years, since his wife’s death, he had a woman on his arm.
However, as Julian was called away to a private corner booth to deal with an urgent dispute between two family captains, Emma was left standing near the champagne fountain.
It didn't take long for the snakes to strike.
A group of three elite socialites, dressed in ultra-thin designer gowns, glided over like vultures. Leading them was Victoria Sterling—the thirty-year-old daughter of Senator Sterling, a woman who had openly schemed for years to marry Julian and secure her family’s syndicate alliance.
Victoria smiled, a cold, poisonous expression that didn't reach her eyes, as she looked Emma up and down, her eyes lingering mockingly on Emma’s full figure.
“So you’re the new... house staff Julian has been keeping at the estate,” Victoria said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness as her friends giggled behind their gloved hands.
Emma lifted her chin, keeping her voice calm and polite. “My name is Emma Brooks. I am the Director of the Brooks Pediatric Initiative.”
“Oh, yes! The little charity project,” Victoria scoffed, taking a slow sip of her champagne. “How sweet. Julian always was generous with his charity cases. But darling... velvet? In that size? Your stylist should be executed. You look like a velvet curtain wrapped around a wine fridge.”
The surrounding socialites let out muffled snickers.
Emma felt a sharp, familiar sting cut through her chest. For a second, the old insecurity threatened to pull her down.
Victoria leaned in closer, her voice dropping into a vicious whisper. “Let me give you some advice, sweetheart. Julian Vance uses women like you for entertainment when he’s bored. You’re a fat, uneducated servant who happened to take a bullet. Do you really think a king like Julian would ever marry a woman who looks like you? You don't belong here. Run back to your ovens before you embarrass him completely.”
Emma took a deep breath. She looked at Victoria’s smug, arrogant face, then looked down at her own hands—hands that had fed people, hands that had built a future, hands that had saved a child’s life.
Emma stepped forward, her broad, regal posture completely dominating the space, her hazel eyes turning ice-cold.
“Victoria, isn't it?” Emma spoke clearly, her voice carrying across the immediate circle of guests. “You’re right. I don't belong in your world. Because in my world, we judge people by what they build, not by what they starve themselves to fit into.”
Victoria’s fake smile faltered. “Excuse me?!”
“And as for Julian,” Emma added, stepping even closer until Victoria was forced to back up against a marble pillar, “if he wanted a hollow, bitter statue who lives on celery and malice, he would have married you five years ago.”
Gasps of shock echoed from the surrounding guests! Victoria’s face turned bright, furious red!
“You fat little bitch!” Victoria shrieked, raising her arm to slap Emma across the face—
CLANK!
A heavy, leather-gloved hand caught Victoria’s wrist in mid-air with hydraulic force!
The air in the ballroom instantly turned to ice.
Julian Vance stepped out from the shadows of the pillar. His face was a mask of cold, murderous malice that sent terror straight down the spines of everyone watching.
With a casual flick of his wrist, Julian twisted Victoria’s arm back, forcing the senator’s daughter to her knees on the marble floor with a sharp cry of pain!
Her champagne glass shattered against the tiles.
“Julian!” Victoria gasped, weeping from pain and humiliation. “She... she insulted me!”
Julian didn't look at Victoria. His dark eyes were fixed entirely on Emma, burning with intense, terrifying pride.
“I heard every word, Victoria,” Julian said, his low baritone cutting through the silent ballroom like a executioner's blade. “You insulted the woman who took a bullet for my daughter. You insulted the future matriarch of the Vance family.”
The ballroom gasped in absolute, overwhelming shock!
Victoria’s eyes bulged with terror. “Future... matriarch?!”
Julian dropped Victoria’s wrist like garbage, stepping over her as if she didn't exist. He walked over to Emma, taking her soft, warm hand in his, and looked at his chief enforcer standing nearby.
“Marco,” Julian commanded coldly.
“Yes, Boss?”
“Cancel Senator Sterling’s campaign funding immediately. Seize their private docks in New Jersey by midnight. If any member of the Sterling family sets foot in Manhattan after tonight... eradicate them.”
“Understood, Boss,” Marco replied smoothly.
Julian turned his back on the ruined socialites. He pulled Emma flush against his chest right there in the center of the grand ballroom, in front of five hundred elite guests, cameras flashing frantically from the press balcony.
He reached into his tuxedo pocket, pulling out a velvet box, and snapped it open.
Inside rested a magnificent, flawless twenty-carat cushion-cut pink diamond ring, surrounded by double bands of micro-pave diamonds.
The entire room went dead silent.
Julian sank down onto one knee before the broad, beautiful baker.
“Julian...” Emma gasped, her hands flying to her mouth, tears flooding her hazel eyes.
“Emma Brooks,” Julian spoke, his voice filled with a raw, powerful emotion that resonated through the entire hall. “You walked into my dark, bloody life and gave my daughter her voice back. You brought light into a house that had forgotten how to feel. You bled for us. You fought for us.”
He reached up, taking her left hand in his broad grip.
“I don't want a trophy wife. I don't want a high-society ghost. I want a queen. I want a woman with a heart vast enough to hold my empire, and hands warm enough to heal my soul. Marry me. Rule this city by my side, and let me spend the rest of my life protecting you.”
Emma looked down at the feared mob king kneeling at her feet, offering her his heart, his empire, and his eternal devotion.
May you like
“Yes!” Emma cried out happily, a radiant smile breaking across her face. “Yes, Julian! A thousand times yes!”
Julian stood up, slipping the massive pink diamond onto her finger, and pulled her into a fierce, passionate kiss as the entire ballroom erupted into thunderous, overwhelming applause!
