Chapter 5 - The Coup at Ashford Academy

Monday morning at Ashford Academy began like any other, with polished German SUVs pulling up to the iron gates, children in pristine navy uniforms stepping out, and card readers chirping in rhythmic sequence.

Except for one major difference.

When Lily Harper walked up to the entrance gate at 7:50 AM, wearing her faded plaid skirt and her taped sneakers, the security guard did not look away. He stood up, smiled warmly, and pressed the manual override button.

The heavy iron gate swung wide open.

"Good morning, Lily," the guard said respectfully.

Lily blinked in surprise, clutched her worn backpack, and walked through the gates with her head held high.

Inside the administrative office, Ms. Keene was busy reviewing the morning billing reports when the heavy mahogany doors of the reception suite suddenly pushed open without warning.

A line of six federal marshals and corporate bailiffs marched into the lobby, led by Arthur Vance carrying a thick stack of legal writs, followed closely by Daniel Mercer.

Ms. Keene stood up, her face draining of all color. "Excuse me! This is a private campus! You cannot enter without an appointment! I am calling security—"

"Don't bother," Arthur said smoothly, slamming a certified foreclosure and receivership document onto her desk. "Security has already been reassigned to Mercer Logistics property management. Effective immediately, Ashford Academy is operating under emergency receivership due to a default on its primary developmental mortgage."

Dr. Weller came bursting out of his private office, his face purple with rage and panic. "What is the meaning of this outrage?! Who authorized this?!"

"I did, Alistair," Daniel said, walking into the office and taking a slow look around the room. He walked over to Dr. Weller's immaculate walnut desk, picked up the gold fountain pen the headmaster had used to dismiss him days earlier, and tossed it into the wastebasket.

"You can't do this!" Dr. Weller shrieked, appealing to the bailiffs. "We are an elite educational institution! We have a board of trustees! We have wealthy donors!"

"Your board of trustees resigned ten minutes ago when they realized their personal liability in your tuition-hold embezzlement and fund-siphoning schemes," Arthur Vance stated flatly, opening a secondary tablet. "And as for your wealthy donors... they're currently reading my press release about how Daniel Mercer just purchased your entire campus for twelve cents on the dollar."

Dr. Weller collapsed heavily into his leather chair, the fight completely draining out of him. "What... what do you want?"

Daniel walked over to the window, looking out across the emerald-green quad where children were laughing and playing before the morning bell. Among them, he spotted a small, familiar figure in a faded plaid skirt, walking hand-in-hand with a classmate toward the library.

"Starting today," Daniel said without turning around, "the rules of this institution are going to change."

He turned to face Dr. Weller and Ms. Keene, his gray eyes burning with cold, absolute authority.

"There are no more tuition holds," Daniel commanded. "If a family falls behind, the school works with them, quietly and with dignity, without ever involving a child. Every scholarship student receives full board, books, and supplies, funded directly by the Mercer Foundation. And the very first person fired from this campus will be anyone who ever tries to make a seven-year-old child feel small because of what's in her bank account."

Ms. Keene opened her mouth to protest, but one look at Daniel's face made her snap it shut. She slowly sat back down in her chair and stared at her hands.

"You have until noon to pack your personal belongings," Daniel told them. "My new head administrator arrives at twelve-thirty."
