Chapter 7 - The Ledger’s Secret

The dust settled over Lake Geneva by late autumn, the crisp air carrying the scent of burning wood and pine needles.
With Margaret exiled to Arizona and Ethan rotting in a maximum-security holding cell in Wisconsin, the Chicago underworld finally fell into a terrified, absolute silence. No one dared challenge me. No one dared question my authority. And most importantly, no one ever dared ask about the two little girls playing on the back lawn.
Inside the study, the fire crackled warmly against the chill of the November evening.
I sat at Claire’s cherry-wood desk, the micro-SD card retrieved from the silver keepsake box plugged directly into my master terminal. Beside me stood Vance, watching the decryption progress bar crawl across the screen.
"Are you sure you want to open this, Boss?" Vance asked quietly. "If Salvatore’s ledger contains what we think it does, it's going to blow half the political and criminal infrastructure of the Midwest wide open."
"I built this empire on truth, Vance," I replied, watching the final files decrypt with a soft chime. "It's time to see what Claire and Helen were really running from."
The screen flashed open, displaying thousands of encrypted folders, bank records, and audio logs.
I clicked on a video file dated four years ago—labeled simply: Helen & Claire.
The video popped up in HD. The camera was shaky, set up in a sunlit kitchen that looked suspiciously like this very lake house. Claire appeared on screen, younger, her face radiant and smiling, holding a newborn infant in each arm. Standing beside her was a woman who looked so identical to Claire it was like staring into a mirror—Helen.
“If you're watching this, Marcus,” Claire’s voice spoke softly from the speakers, filled with a warmth that nearly stopped my heart. “It means I didn't make it. And Helen is gone too.”
I leaned forward, gripping the edge of the desk so hard my knuckles turned white.
“Helen didn't steal from Detroit to be a criminal,” Claire continued on the recording, a tear slipping down her cheek as she rocked the sleeping twins. “She stole the ledger because Salvatore was planning to use our family as collateral to launder drug money across the country. She ran to me for help. I hid her, I helped her fake her death, and when she passed away from the fever last month, she made me promise to protect her girls with my life.”
Claire paused, looking directly into the camera lens as if she were staring straight into my eyes.
“I kept secrets from you, my love. I had to. The underworld we live in doesn't forgive softness. But I knew that if anyone in this world had the strength to love them, to protect them, and to give them a real home when the world turned its back... it was you. Take care of my girls, Marcus. They are all the love I left behind.”
The video faded to black.
The room was so quiet I could hear the crackle of the fireplace and the distant, muffled sound of Ivy and Skye giggling upstairs as they played with their dolls before bed.
I reached up, touching the silver wedding band resting on the chain against my chest.
"Boss?" Vance asked softly, breaking the silence. "What do we do with the ledger?"
I looked at the screen, then reached out and pressed a single key.
Format Complete.

Every file, every bank record, every dirty secret of the Detroit syndicate vanished into the digital void.
"We don't need their secrets, Vance," I said, standing up from the desk and buttoning my jacket. "We have everything we need right here."
