Chapter 6 - The Table by the River

One year later.
The autumn sun bathed downtown Chicago in bright golden light. The cool breeze carried the crisp scent of fallen leaves along the riverwalk.
At Meridian, the city’s most prestigious restaurant, Table 17 was set with pristine white linen, sparkling crystal glasses, and a fresh vase of white roses.
The restaurant was closed to the public for a private afternoon celebration.
In the kitchen, the head chef was smiling broadly as he plated a perfect, rare ribeye steak beside a dish of fresh sea salt. In the dining room, Victor Hale and Dean were bustling around with champagne buckets, their faces bright with genuine happiness.
Sitting at Table 17 were three people.
Grant Calloway sat in his usual chair, looking handsome and relaxed in a dark tailored suit, his eyes filled with endless warmth.
Sitting across from him was Lily—now Lily Calloway—wearing a simple, elegant ivory silk dress, her golden hair catching the sunlight.
And sitting between them on a booster seat was five-year-old Maya.
Maya was giggling happily, using a silver spoon to scoop vanilla ice cream into her mouth, her curly hair bouncing with every bite.
“Look, Daddy!” Maya said clearly, pointing her spoon toward the tall glass windows overlooking the river. “The big boat is waving at us!”
Grant smiled, leaning over to kiss his daughter’s cheek. “It sure is, sweetheart.”
He then reached across the table, his fingers interlocking with Lily’s ringed hand. His thumb gently stroked her skin, feeling the smooth gold band that sealed their devotion.
“Do you remember the first time you walked up to this table?” Grant asked softly, his dark eyes searching hers with deep, eternal love.
Lily laughed softly, a bright, beautiful sound that echoed through the quiet dining room. “I remember thinking that you were the scariest man in Chicago, and that I had forty-three dollars left in my bank account.”
“And what do you think now?” Grant asked, leaning closer across the white linen.
Lily looked at Maya’s bright, laughing face, then into the warm, devoted eyes of the billionaire who had given her his entire heart.

“I think,” Lily whispered, leaning forward to press a soft, sweet kiss against his lips, “that nobody should ever be afraid of the truth. Because the truth brought me to you.”
Outside, the river flowed gently under the autumn sky, illuminating a table that was no longer marked by fear or silence, but built forever on love, courage, and a restored future.
