Chapter 2 - The Silent Interrogation

The package arrived at my office the following afternoon disguised in a non-descript cardboard box. I opened it at my desk during my lunch break, carefully inspecting the two devices.
They looked identical to standard battery-operated smoke detectors—white, plastic, unremarkable. But hidden behind the tiny grill of each device was a 4K wide-angle camera lens powered by a long-lasting lithium battery, recording directly to a concealed high-capacity micro-SD card. They didn't rely on Wi-Fi signals. They couldn't be jammed, turned off via app, or detected by network scanners.
That evening, I waited until 11:00 PM. The house was completely quiet. My mother had retired to her room after posting another lengthy update on her Facebook page—a photo of a home-cooked soup accompanied by a caption detailing how tirelessly she was working to support her "fragile, struggling family."
I stepped quietly out of bed, carrying a small step ladder and a screwdriver from my toolbox.
Walking on the balls of my feet to avoid the squeaky floorboards in the hallway, I entered the nursery. The room was bathed in the soft blue glow of the nightlight. Micah was sleeping soundly in his crib, breathing in short, rhythmic puffs.
I unclipped the standard builder-grade smoke detector from the ceiling directly above the nursing glider chair and replaced it with the hidden camera unit. It snapped into place with a subtle, satisfying click. From its elevated angle, the lens captured the crib, the changing table, the doorway, and the entire seating area.
I installed the second unit in the hallway directly outside our master bedroom, commanding a clear view of the linen closet and the entrance to the kitchen.
When I finished, I stepped back, looking up at the ceiling. Even knowing where the tiny lens was located, it was entirely invisible to the naked eye.
"Now," I whispered to the empty room, "let's see what happens at nine in the morning."
The next day at work was a exercise in agony.
As expected, at 8:57 AM, the primary Wi-Fi camera feed went dark. My mother had pulled the plug right on schedule.
I sat at my desk, my fingers trembling slightly as I stared at the blank screen. I couldn't view the hidden camera footage in real time—it was being recorded locally to the internal storage card—which meant I had to endure eight long hours of absolute uncertainty before I could retrieve the evidence.
Every minute felt like an eternity. Every phone call from home made my heart jump into my throat. But I knew I had to act normal. If Darlene suspected I was onto her, she would change her tactics or destroy whatever evidence she was creating.
When 5:00 PM finally arrived, I sprinted to my car, driving across town through heavy evening traffic like a man possessed.
When I unlocked the front door, the house felt strangely heavy, wrapped in an uncomfortable, suffocating stillness. Darlene was sitting on the living room sofa, scrolling through her tablet with a soft, satisfied smile on her face.
"Everett, sweetie," she greeted me smoothly without looking up from her screen. "I just posted the pictures from our afternoon walk. Over two hundred people have already liked the update. Everyone is sending prayers for Camille's speedy recovery."
"Where is Camille?" I asked, my voice tight as I kicked off my shoes.
"Oh, she's resting in bed again," Darlene sighed softly, tapping her screen. "She had another emotional breakdown around ten this morning. She kept insisting she wanted to hold Micah, but she was trembling so badly I couldn't in good conscience hand a fragile newborn to her. It's just safer if I manage the baby while she gets her strength back."
I felt a surge of cold fury rising in my chest, but I forced my expression to remain neutral. "I'll go check on her."
"Don't disturb her, dear," Darlene called out gently behind me. "I gave her a warm glass of tea with her evening supplement. She needs sleep more than anything."
I walked straight to the nursery first, pretending to check on Micah. While standing over his crib, I reached up, pressed the hidden release latch on the fake smoke detector, and slipped the micro-SD card into my pocket.
Then, I went to our master bedroom, locked the door from the inside, and opened my laptop.
My hands shook as I inserted the memory card into the reader slot. The computer folder populated with several hours of high-definition video files, neatly organized by timestamp.
I scrolled down to the file labeled 08:55:00 AM.
I pressed play.
The video lit up my screen in crisp, terrifying clarity.
At 8:57 AM, Darlene walked into the nursery. She looked up at the wall-mounted Wi-Fi camera, reached out, and pulled the power cord from the wall outlet.
The moment the camera died, her warm, motherly demeanor vanished instantly.
She turned toward the nursery door. A few seconds later, Camille entered the room. She was holding the wall for support, walking slowly, her face pale and drawn.
"Darlene..." Camille’s soft voice came clearly through the laptop speakers. "Is it time for Micah's feeding? My breasts are hurting, and I really want to nurse him today. The doctor said..."
Darlene blocked the path to the crib, crossing her arms over her chest. Her face was set in a look of disgust.
"You aren't nursing him today, Camille," Darlene said, her voice dropping into a sharp, icy tone I had never heard her use in my entire life.
Camille stopped, looking confused and hurt. "What? Why? I'm his mother, Darlene. The doctor said skin-to-skin contact is vital for his growth—"
"You are unfit!" Darlene barked softly, stepping closer into Camille's personal space, looming over my weakened wife. "Look at you! You can barely stand up without sweating! You're weak, pathetic, and clumsy. Yesterday you almost spilled water on the carpet. Do you really think I'm going to let an unstable, sickly girl hold my grandson?"
"I am not unstable!" Camille cried out softly, tears instantly welling in her eyes. "I lost blood during the delivery! I'm recovering! Please, Darlene, just let me hold my baby..."
Camille tried to step past her toward the crib, but Darlene extended her arm, forcefully pushing Camille back by her chest. Because of her abdominal stitches, Camille gasped in sharp physical pain, clutching her stomach as she stumbled backward against the wall.
"Listen to me very carefully, you little fool," Darlene hissed, pointing a finger inches from Camille's tear-streaked face. "Everett works forty hours a week to pay for this house. He needs a strong, capable wife, not an invalid burden who whimpers all day. Every time you complain, every time you show weakness, you are driving him further away."
"He loves me!" Camille sobbed, her body shaking hysterically.
"He pities you!" Darlene corrected ruthlessly. "And pity runs out very quickly, my dear. If you keep pushing, if you make a scene, I will personally ensure Everett realizes you are suffering from severe postpartum psychosis. Who do you think he will believe? His mother, who has taken care of families for forty years... or a hysterical girl who can't even carry a laundry basket?"
Camille stood frozen against the wall, weeping silently, utterly shattered.
Darlene stepped back, smoothing down her cardigan with a pristine smile. "Now, go back to your room, take the herbal sedatives I poured into your tea, and stay out of my way until Everett comes home. Do you understand me?"
Camille lowered her head, her shoulders slumping in absolute defeat. "Yes, Darlene..." she whispered brokenly, before shuffling out of the room like a prisoner returning to a cell.
Sitting at my desk in the dark room, staring at the screen, a sound ripped from my throat—a choked, terrifying cry of pure rage and heartbreak.

The mother I had trusted, the woman the world believed was a saint, was systematically destroying my wife's mind, abusing her physically, and poisoning our marriage from the inside out.
And I had let her walk right through our front door.
