Chapter 3 - FLUSHING OUT THE POISON

The days following the discovery were a chaotic storm within the walls of the Hale estate.

Top specialists from Johns Hopkins and the Mayo Clinic arrived via private helicopters. Under Dominic’s strict supervision, they began an intensive detoxification process for young Noah. The realization that Noah’s condition was not a genetic death sentence, but a case of chronic poisoning, changed everything.

Within four days of stopping the toxic shakes, the change in Noah was miraculous.

The severe stomach cramps vanished. The terrifying heart arrhythmias stabilized. The color slowly returned to his pale cheeks. Though he was still weak from three years of muscular atrophy, the light in his hazel eyes—eyes so similar to Ellie's—returned with a vengeance.

Sarah was asked to remain on the third floor permanently, not as a housekeeper, but as Noah’s personal care supervisor. Dominic no longer trusted any outside medical staff or nurses.

Ellie became Noah's constant companion. The seven-year-old boy, who had spent three years trapped in a dark bed isolated from the world, found endless joy in the tiny girl who talked to her rag doll and brought him bright drawings of sunshine and animals.

"Look, Noah!" Ellie said one afternoon, sitting on the edge of his bed with a box of crayons. "I drew a dragon. It guards your bed so bad people can't come in."

Noah smiled—a genuine, beautiful smile that made Sarah’s heart swell. "Does the dragon have a name?"

"His name is Captain Fire," Ellie announced proudly.

From the doorway, Dominic watched the interaction. For the first time in three years, the heavy weight on his shoulders seemed to lift slightly. He stepped into the room, carrying a tray of fresh fruit and natural juices that had been prepared under his personal supervision.

"How is my warrior doing today?" Dominic asked, walking over to the bed.

"Dad!" Noah sat up, his voice stronger than it had been in years. "Ellie drew a dragon for me! And look, I can move my legs without them hurting!"

Dominic sat on the edge of the mattress and pulled his son into a fierce, protective embrace. He closed his eyes, burying his face in Noah’s dark hair, holding back tears of raw gratitude. "I see, son. You're getting stronger every single day."

Dominic looked up at Sarah, who was tidying the room nearby. "Sarah, may I speak with you in the hall for a moment?"

Sarah nodded, leaving Ellie and Noah to continue their drawing session.

Out in the hallway, Dominic handed Sarah a thick manila folder. "Evelyn talked."

Sarah gasped softly. "She did?"

"Under proper... persuasion," Dominic said coldly, his eyes darkening. "She confessed everything. Marcus planned this from the very beginning. Four years ago, Marcus began secretly building an alliance with the Moretti syndicate—our rivals in New York."

Sarah listened intently, her blood running cold.

"Marcus knew he couldn't defeat me in an open war," Dominic continued. "So he decided to destroy me from the inside out. He arranged the crash that killed my wife Claire. He paid off the mechanic, wiped the security footage, and eliminated the witnesses."

"That monster..." Sarah whispered.

"It gets worse," Dominic said, his jaw tightening. "He knew that if Claire died, I would be heartbroken, but I would still be dangerous. So he targeted Noah. He brought Evelyn into my life to slowly poison my son. The goal was to make me watch my only child die slowly. He knew that grief would break my mind, force me to step down, and hand over the Hale empire to him."

"And Dr. Cross agreed to do that to a child?" Sarah asked, disgusted.

"Marcus promised her twenty million dollars and half of my corporate holdings," Dominic said. "Greed makes monsters out of people."

"Where is Marcus now?" Sarah asked nervously.

"He's hiding," Dominic said. "The Moretti family is protecting him in New York. They think Marcus can still give them my shipping routes. But Marcus made a mistake."

Dominic tapped the file in Sarah's hands. "Evelyn gave us the locations of Marcus’s off-shore accounts, his safe houses, and the names of the dirty federal agents on his payroll. We are systematically tearing down his empire piece by piece. By next week, he won't have a penny left to his name."

Dominic stepped closer to Sarah. His gray eyes softened as he looked down at her. "I owe you everything, Sarah. If you hadn't brought Ellie into this house, my son would be dead in a month. I can never repay that debt."

"You don't owe me anything, Mr. Hale," Sarah said softly. "I just did what any mother would do."

"No," Dominic insisted firmly. "I protect those who protect my family. Starting today, you are no longer a housekeeper here."

Sarah blinked, startled. "I... I'm fired?"

Dominic let out a rare, low laugh. "Fired? Never. You are the estate’s household manager, with a salary that ensures you and Ellie will never have to worry about money again. And Ellie..." Dominic smiled warmly. "Ellie is family now. Whatever she wants, whatever she needs, for the rest of her life, it's taken care of."

Sarah felt tears well up in her eyes. After eighteen months of crushing poverty, fear, and grief following her husband's death, someone was finally standing up to protect her. "Thank you, Dominic. Thank you."

It was the first time she had called him by his first name. Dominic noticed, and a small, genuine smile touched his lips.

However, the peace in the Hale estate was short-lived.

Late that evening, a massive storm rolled over Greenwich. Thunder rumbled across the sky, and torrential rain lashed against the high windows of the mansion.

At 2:00 AM, the estate's emergency alarm system suddenly roared to life.

Red flashing lights illuminated the hallways. Sirens wailed through the vast mansion.

Sarah woke up with a start in her second-floor suite. She scrambled out of bed, grabbing Ellie into her arms. The door to her suite burst open, and Viktor stormed in, carrying an automatic rifle.

"Sarah! Take the kid and get to the panic room in the basement now!" Viktor barked over the deafening sirens.

"What's happening?!" Sarah yelled over the noise.

"It's Marcus!" Viktor shouted. "He knows Evelyn confessed! He brought a team of Moretti mercenaries! They cut the main power lines and bypassed the perimeter gate! They're inside the house!"
