Chapter 2 - THE SECRETS OF THE PAST

The word hung in the damp basement air, heavier than the concrete foundation above them.

Daddy?

Victor Moretti staggered half a step backward, his hand instinctively dropping away from his coat where his weapon rested. The formidable syndicate boss—a man who had survived car bombs, federal indictments, and bloody corporate takeovers—looked as though he had just been struck across the chest with a sledgehammer.

His eyes darted from Noah’s dark, expressive curls to the sharp line of the boy's jaw, then to the framed photograph on the wall, and finally to Olivia, whose eyes were swimming with unshed tears.

"What is this?" Victor whispered, his voice dangerously low, stripped of all its usual authority. He looked at Olivia, his chest rising and falling rapidly. "Explain this to me right now, Olivia. Who are these children?"

"They are Elena’s children," Olivia managed to say, her voice cracking as she knelt down to pull Noah back behind her. "Or... at least, they were her responsibility after..."

"Elena," Victor breathed out, the name tearing through him like a physical wound. He took two slow, heavy steps forward, ignoring the guards behind him, and stared down at the photograph on the wall. "Elena passed away two years ago. The hospital told me she died of complications from a sudden illness. They said she had no family left."

"She didn't have family," Olivia corrected, her voice hardening with sudden, defensive fury. "She had you. But you were too busy building your empire, crushing your rivals, and wearing a crown of blood to notice that the woman who loved you was living in poverty on the South Side, raising your son—and the children of your closest allies who died in the turf wars."

The silence that followed was absolute.

Daniel, fourteen, stepped in front of Olivia, his small fists clenched at his sides, glaring up at the most dangerous man in the city. "Leave her alone! She didn't do anything wrong! She just takes care of us because nobody else gave a damn!"

Victor didn't look at Daniel. His grey eyes remained locked on Olivia, the horrific weight of a forgotten past crashing down on his shoulders.

Six years ago, before the crown and the paranoia, Victor had loved a woman named Elena Russo. But the underworld was closing in around him. Assassination attempts on his father’s life had forced Victor into a brutal, paranoid war for survival. To protect Elena from the crossfire, he had pushed her away, believing his absence was her best shield.

He had never known she was pregnant. He had never known she spent the rest of her life hiding in the shadows of the very city he ruled.

"You knew," Victor said quietly, looking back down at Olivia. "You worked for me for seven months. You organized my life, you poured my coffee every morning... and you knew the whole time."

"I found out eighteen months ago, right after Elena died," Olivia answered, her voice trembling as she stood up to face him. "I found her journals in this very basement. She wrote about you every day. She loved you until her final breath. And when she realized she was dying, she made me promise to keep her children out of your world. She said your enemies would use them as leverage, that your life was a war zone where innocent kids only served as ammunition."

Victor closed his eyes. For the first time in his adult life, the untouchable Wolf of Chicago looked entirely broken.

He looked at Noah, who was tugging on Olivia’s sleeve, whispering, "Is he going to take us away?"

Victor dropped to one knee, ignoring the cold, damp concrete staining his expensive Italian wool trousers. He looked at the six children staring back at him with a mixture of fear and fierce curiosity.

Then he looked up at Olivia.

"Pack their bags," Victor said, his voice dropping into a fierce, unbreakable vow. "They aren't staying in this basement another minute."

"Victor, no!" Olivia protested, panic flashing in her eyes. "If your rivals find out you have children—if the board at the syndicate catches wind of this—they'll come after them! That's why Elena hid them! That's why I hid them!"

"Let them come," Victor whispered, standing slowly to his full height, his eyes flashing with a cold, terrifying menace that made his security guards instinctively step back. "Nobody touches my blood. Nobody touches my home."
