Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of Brooks

The fallout from the wedding confrontation was swift, ruthless, and absolute.
By Monday morning, the story was on the front page of every major news outlet in the country: THE THIRTY-MILLION-DOLLAR WEDDING COLLAPSE: TECH CEO AND FIANCÉE ARRESTED AT ALTAR FOR TRUST FUND FRAUD.
The financial freeze executed by Arthur Pendelton and Evelyn Sterling took effect within hours. Every asset tied to C&A Enterprise Holdings was seized by federal marshals. Adrian’s tech startup, stripped of its fraudulent capital, collapsed overnight as investors pulled out their funds and board members resigned in mass panic.
Celeste Adams, facing multiple counts of federal wire fraud and identity theft, was held on a two-million-dollar bond. Her uncle, David Adams, offered a full confession to federal prosecutors in exchange for a reduced sentence—plea bargaining by delivering complete electronic evidence that implicated both Celeste and Adrian as co-conspirators in the theft of my grandmother’s trust.
Adrian Brooks was released on electronic monitoring pending trial, stripped of his passport, his accounts, and his home. The penthouse we had once shared was foreclosed upon by the bank to cover his unpaid corporate debts.
Three weeks after the wedding, I sat in Arthur Pendelton’s high-rise office in downtown Chicago, holding a steaming cup of tea. Maya lay peacefully in her stroller beside my chair, gcountering the afternoon sunlight with soft, contented coos.
Arthur closed a thick blue folder on his desk and smiled warmly at me.
"The federal court has finalized the asset recovery, Mia," Arthur announced. "All thirty million dollars stolen from your grandmother’s trust has been fully recovered from the frozen accounts, along with an additional two million dollars in court-ordered restitution paid from the liquidation of Adrian’s personal properties."
I took a quiet sip of tea, feeling a deep, profound wave of relief wash over my soul. "And the custody hearing?"
"Adrian’s court-appointed public defender attempted to request visitation rights yesterday," Arthur revealed, his eyes glittering with quiet triumph. "Judge Vance denied the petition instantly. Given his pending felony indictments and documented history of fraud, the court granted you sole legal and physical custody, with a permanent restraining order prohibiting Adrian, Celeste, or Eleanor Brooks from coming within one thousand feet of you or Maya."
A soft knock sounded at Arthur’s office door.
Evelyn Sterling stepped inside, wearing her signature crisp suit, holding a leather briefcase.
"Mia," Evelyn greeted with a warm, rare smile. "I brought the final paperwork from Vanguard Global’s executive board."
She laid a document on the desk in front of me.
"In light of the scandal and the termination of our regional management," Evelyn explained, "Vanguard’s board of directors has officially voted to appoint you as the chief trustee of the newly established Carter Foundation for Women and Children—a fifty-million-dollar endowment created to fund legal and medical support for women facing domestic financial abuse."
I stared at the document, my eyes shining with unshed tears.
"They want me to lead the foundation?" I asked, my voice trembling slightly.
"You proved that you have the courage, the intelligence, and the iron will required to protect the vulnerable, Mia," Evelyn said sincerely. "You didn't just save yourself and your daughter. You exposed a systemic rot."
May you like
I looked down at Maya, who opened her small eyes and smiled up at me—a bright, pure smile free from any shadow of the past.
"I accept," I whispered.
