Chapter 4 - The War in the Boardroom

The executive boardroom of the Callaway Grand was built for intimidation. A single massive slab of black granite served as the table, surrounded by leather chairs overlooking the glittering expanse of the city.

At 10:00 a.m., the board members of Vanguard Real Estate Holdings arrived expecting a routine corporate buyout negotiation. Instead, they walked into a trap.

Julian Vane sat at the head of the table, looking pale and furious, flanked by two corporate attorneys carrying thick leather briefcases. Across from them sat Donovan Ree, flanked not by lawyers, but by Greer and two federal investigators from the State Attorney General’s Economic Crimes Division.

"What is the meaning of this?" one of the Vanguard board members demanded, slamming his briefcase onto the granite table. "This is a private corporate meeting. Why are federal agents present?"

"It’s not private anymore," Donovan said calmly, sitting at the center of the opposite side of the table. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to. "Federal investigators are here because every document you used to liquidate the Callaway Legacy Fund over the last eighteen months constitutes wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit financial extortion against a minor."

Vane forced a harsh, nervous laugh. "Absurd! The transfer was approved under standard receivership protocols. The child had no active guardian contesting the liquidation—"

"Because you paid Ruth Callaway thirty thousand dollars to disappear and threatened her with CPS if she ever contacted the bank," Greer interrupted, sliding a certified bank deposit slip and a recorded phone transcript onto the center of the table. "We located Ruth in a motel fifty miles north three hours ago. She gave a full confession to the state police, complete with your signature on the cash withdrawal, Mr. Vane."

The color drained entirely from Vane’s face. He snatched the paper, his eyes scanning the lines of text. The signature was unmistakable—his own, authorizing the hush money.

"This is fabricated," Vane choked out, standing up so fast his chair screeched against the floor. "You framed me—"

"Sit down, Julian," one of the federal agents said quietly, stepping forward and placing a pair of steel handcuffs on the granite table. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

The silence in the boardroom was absolute. The other Vanguard board members slowly slid their chairs backward, desperate to distance themselves from a sinking ship that had just hit an iceberg named Donovan Ree.

"Take him out," Donovan ordered.

Two agents stepped forward, gripped Vane by the arms, and hauled him out of the boardroom, his expensive Italian leather shoes scraping helplessly against the floor.

When the heavy doors clicked shut behind them, Donovan stood up. He buttoned his black overcoat, looked at the remaining paralyzed board members, and spoke with absolute finality.

"Vanguard's assets in this hotel are hereby seized under federal forfeiture laws for restitution to the Callaway estate," Donovan said. "And as of this moment, my stake in this building is one hundred percent. Meeting adjourned."
