Chapter 6 - The Digital Hand Grenade

Two days later, Naomi sat at her kitchen table in Bridgeport, staring at her laptop screen in absolute, paralyzing disbelief.

An anonymous notification had pinged her secondary email inbox—a single cloud link titled: “Listen to what happens when you aren't around.”

With shaking hands, Naomi clicked the file.

The audio began with the muffled sounds of garden party chatter, followed immediately by Vanessa’s sharp, vicious voice: “Don't you think you’re doing with my phone, you little brat?!”

Then came the sounds of a struggle, a child crying out in pain, and Vanessa’s unmistakable, venomous confession spoken with chilling clarity: “Your mother abandoned you for a better life. You belong to me now... and I’ll make sure she stays broken forever.”

Naomi listened to the recording three times.

With every replay, the grief and helplessness that had crushed her chest for months evaporated, replaced by a cold, incandescent fury that burned hotter than a furnace.

“Get the best family law litigator in Illinois.”
