Chapter 2 - The Ghost on the Camera

At two in the morning, the Marchetti mansion was drowned in absolute silence.

Dante lay in the grand master bed, listening to the soft, rhythmic breathing of his wife beside him. She was fast asleep, one arm draped peacefully over her silk pillow.

Slowly, silently, Dante slipped out of bed.

He didn't put on his shoes. In his socks, wearing dark trousers and a black sweater, he moved through the shadows of the hallway like a phantom. He bypassed the main staircase and took the hidden service stairs down to the basement level, where the estate's central security control room was located.

The guard on duty, a young loyal soldier named Leo, stood up instantly when the heavy iron door opened.

"Boss!" Leo stammered, pulling off his headphones.

"Quiet," Dante ordered in a sharp whisper. "Hand me the master override key for the server stack."

Leo hesitated for a fraction of a second, then quickly unhooked a silver USB key from his belt and handed it over. "Boss... is everything all right?"

"Delete the access logs for the next hour," Dante commanded as he plugged the key into the main console. "If anyone asks, I was in my room asleep."

"Understood, sir."

Dante pulled up the archival video feeds from six months ago—the night Isabella claimed Camila had snuck out of the estate at three in the morning.

On the official security record presented to Dante six months ago, the perimeter cameras showed empty driveways and undisturbed lawn shadows all night.

Dante inserted his master key, bypassing the secondary software layer that the estate’s IT contractor—a firm recommended by Camila’s family—had installed. He pulled up the raw, uncompressed camera logs stored on the physical hard drives in the basement rack.

He scrubbed the timeline to 03:14 AM.

Dante’s breath hitched in his throat.

On the raw feed, the official loop vanished.

At 03:14 AM, a sleek, unregistered black sedan pulled up near the rear gate—in a camera blind spot that shouldn't have existed unless the camera angle had been manually adjusted by fifteen degrees.

A figure in a dark hooded coat stepped out of the rear terrace door of the mansion. The figure walked with absolute familiarity toward the sedan. As the driver lowered the tinted window to hand the figure a small leather package, the security floodlight flickered for a brief second.

The hood slid back slightly.

It was Camila.

Dante leaned closer to the high-definition monitor, his pulse hammering in his ears like a war drum.

He zoomed in on the driver’s face in the sedan. The man was wearing a dark suit, his face illuminated by the faint blue light of the dashboard. He had a distinctive, jagged lightning-shaped scar running from his left temple down to his jawline.

Dante’s hands froze on the keyboard.

He knew that scar. Every syndicate in the Northeast knew that scar.

It belonged to Hector Vane—the chief enforcer for the Moretti crime family.

The Morettis were the sworn enemies of the Marchetti family. They were the syndicate that Dante’s father had fought for twenty years. And most importantly... Hector Vane was the man who had ordered the hit on the car two years ago that killed Dante’s first wife, Elena.

Camila wasn't just lying about Isabella.

She was communicating directly with the man who had murdered Dante’s first wife.

Dante stood up from the console so fast his chair rolled backward into the server rack. The blood roared in his ears, hot and suffocating.

Everything—every lie, every "accident," every subtle manipulation over the past eighteen months—crystallized into a single, terrifying picture.

Camila wasn't a peace offering from an allied family. She was a Trojan horse. She had been planted in his bed, in his house, and around his daughter to systematically dismantle the Marchetti empire from within, gaslighting his child until Dante locked her away in an institution, leaving Camila in full control of the family estate.

Dante turned to Leo.

"Leo," Dante said, his voice dropping into a register so cold, so terrifying, that the young guard visibly shook.

"S-sir?"

"Gather six men from my father’s old guard. Men who took the oath before I was married. No one under thirty. No one hired in the last two years."

"Where are we going, boss?"

May you like

Dante looked at the frozen image of Hector Vane on the monitor.

"Upstairs," Dante whispered. "To my daughter's room."
