Chapter 2 - The Hidden File

Lily stepped forward and placed her tiny, warm hand into his massive, scarred palm. Aleandro closed his fingers around hers with gentle, agonizing care, as if holding a piece of spun glass.

Sarah rushed forward, pulling Lily behind her back, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. "Aleandro! Stop! Don't touch her!"

Aleandro stood up slowly, wiping his eyes with the back of his hand. His tears stopped, replaced by a profound, agonizing sorrow as he looked at Sarah for the first time in three years.

"Sarah," he said quietly. "You ran."

"I had to!" Sarah cried, her voice shaking with rage and fear. "I saw the news! I saw who you really were! Do you have any idea what men like you do to children? I couldn't let my daughter grow up in your violent, blood-soaked world!"

Aleandro reached into his breast pocket. Sarah flinched, pulling Lily closer.

He didn't pull a gun. He pulled out a thick, leather-bound folder stamped with a red seal from New York Presbyterian Hospital. He held it out to her.

"Read it, Sarah," Aleandro said softly.

Sarah stared at the file, then slowly took it from his hand. She opened the cover.

Inside were hundreds of pages of medical records, progress notes, and high-resolution ultrasound scans dating back three years—from the exact week she had checked into that cheap Queens motel.

Her breath hitched. "What... what is this?"

"I knew about the pregnancy three days after you left," Aleandro revealed, his voice thick with emotion. "I knew when you checked into the motel in Queens. I knew when you gave birth in Brooklyn. I knew the exact date, time, and weight when Lily was born."

Sarah’s head snapped up, her eyes wide with horror and shock. "You... you knew all along? You were tracking me?!"

"I wasn't tracking you to hurt you, Sarah," Aleandro said gently. "I was protecting you."

He stepped closer, his voice dropping into an earnest whisper.

"The night you left, a war broke out in the Moretti syndicate. My own cousin tried to seize power. If my enemies had known you were carrying my child, they would have used both of you to destroy me. So I let you disappear. I made sure my name stayed off the birth certificate. I let you think you were alone... so you would be safe."

Sarah flipped through the pages with trembling fingers.

Every doctor’s appointment she had ever attended was documented. Every vaccination Lily received. The time Lily had a fever at two years old—the specialist who had 'coincidentally' been on shift at the urgent care clinic had been hired personally by Aleandro. The discount groceries at the corner market, the cheap rent above the laundromat—it wasn't luck.

Aleandro had been subsidizing her entire life from the shadows for three full years.

"Every single day of her life, Sarah," Aleandro whispered, tears glistening in his eyes once more. "I watched her grow through photographs. I stood outside her daycare in the rain just to hear her laugh through the open window. I was watching. Always watching."
