Chapter 2 - The Austin Dream

Marcus slotted the flash drive into his laptop. For ten minutes, the only sound in the room was the rhythmic tapping of his keyboard and the distant hum of city traffic outside the window.

Gradually, the color drained from Marcus’s face. He stopped typing, staring at the columns of numbers illuminating the screen.

"Daniel... do you have any idea what your wife uncovered before she died?" Marcus whispered, looking up at me with wide, stunned eyes.

"Tell me."

"This isn't just corporate tax evasion," Marcus said, turning the laptop toward me. "Rachel’s husband, Brad, didn't build those luxury apartment complexes in West Austin with standard bank loans. Your father has been funneling millions of dollars from the logistics company's primary payroll accounts into a shell corporation registered in Delaware called 'Austin Dream Holdings.' They've been inflating their operating costs, underpaying their drivers, and laundering the excess cash through Rachel’s boutique interior design firm."

The puzzle pieces snapped together with a sickening, heavy thud.

Claire hadn't just become distant and stressed in her final months because of her illness. She had discovered that my father and sister were systematically embezzling money, exposing the entire family name to federal racketeering charges. She had been carrying that secret alone, trying to protect me from the ugly truth of the people I shared DNA with.

And Rachel knew it. That was why she hated Claire. That was why she felt entirely comfortable striking my daughter—because in her twisted, arrogant mind, she believed she held all the cards. She thought Claire’s death had buried the evidence forever.

"If this data goes to the IRS or the forensic audit division," Marcus muttered, "your father loses the company. Brad goes to federal prison. Rachel loses her mansion, her cars, and her social standing. It’s total annihilation for them."

"Good," I said, standing up, my hands clenched into fists inside my pockets. "Draft the formal notification. We aren't going to court for a restraining order, Marcus. We're going to give them an ultimatum."

Before Marcus could reply, my phone vibrated on the desk. It was an unknown local number. I picked it up, expecting a telemarketer or a reporter.

"Daniel?" a deep, aggressive voice barked through the speaker. It was Brad, Rachel’s husband.

"What do you want, Brad?"

"Listen to me, you arrogant son of a b*tch," Brad snarled. "Your mother told me what you did at the hospital. If those police reports hit the evening blotter, I will personally ensure your employment at the logistics firm is terminated by noon. I’ve already spoken to the board. We are freezing your shares. You think you can walk out on this family and play the grieving martyr? You’re broke by lunchtime, Daniel. Bring Lily back to your mother’s house to apologize to Rachel, or I will ruin you."

I listened to his threats, a cold, ironic smile spreading across my lips.

"I'm sitting in Marcus Vance's office right now, Brad," I said smoothly. "And I'm currently looking at a digital document titled 'Austin Dream Holdings, Tax Year 2024.' Do you want to repeat that threat, or should I just hit 'send' to the federal prosecutor's office?"

The line went completely dead. The arrogant, untouchable developer had just realized he was standing on a landmine, and my foot was firmly on the detonator.
