Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Fallen

The impact of Rowan’s fist connected with a sickening crack.
Gavin Cross stumbled backward, sputtering blood, his gun discharging wildly into the asphalt with a dull THWIP sound from the suppressor.
Before Cross could recover, Rowan tackled him into the rain-soaked mud, driving his shoulder into Cross’s chest. The two men rolled across the slick ground, throwing wild, brutal punches in the dark.
"Clear! Clear!" Rowan roared into his earpiece as he slammed Cross's gun arm against the concrete curb, forcing the weapon from his grip.
Instantly, the dark night exploded into life.
Flashbang grenades detonated with deafening CRACKS, illuminating the truck stop in blinding white light. Sirens wailed as four heavy SWAT armored vehicles tore onto the lot from all directions, their high-powered spotlights pinning Cross and Rowan in a beam of pure light.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP TO THE GROUND! DON'T MOVE!" booming voices roared through megaphones.
Cross, dazed and bleeding from his broken jaw, tried to crawl toward his truck. But three heavily armed tactical officers swarmed over him like a wave, pinning him to the muddy pavement and snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists with brutal efficiency.
"Target secured! Gavin Cross is in custody!" a SWAT commander yelled into his radio.
Rowan pushed himself up from the mud, gasping for air, rain washing the blood off his knuckles. He rushed to the open passenger door of the Ford F-150.
Detective Vance was already there, gently pulling Delaney out of the cab and cutting the zip-ties from her wrists with a tactical knife. Vance carefully peeled the duct tape from her mouth.
Delaney collapsed onto the wet pavement, sobbing hysterically. "Rowan... Rowan, I'm sorry... I'm so sorry... Is Elsie... are the kids—"
Rowan stood over her, his chest heaving, his face an unreadable mask of cold stone. He didn't reach down to help her up. He didn't offer a gentle word.
"Elsie is in the ICU," Rowan said, his voice slicing through her sobs like a razor. "She nearly died of dehydration and heat stroke because you locked her in that house to save your stolen money."
"I didn't want to leave them!" Delaney wept, clutching her bruised wrists to her chest. "Gavin showed up... he threatened to kill me if I didn't give him the money from five years ago... I thought... I thought I could get the cash from the bank and come right back for them... but he took my phone... he locked me in the truck..."
"You had three days, Delaney," Rowan said, his voice trembling with a mixture of disgust and heartbreak. "You had three days to find a way to make a call. You had three days to save your children. But you cared more about three million dollars in stolen money than you did about Micah and Elsie."
Two FBI agents stepped forward, placing heavy hands on Delaney’s shoulders.
"Delaney Mercer," an agent announced formally, pulling her to her feet, "you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, conspiracy to launder money, and two felony counts of aggravated child neglect and endangerment."
As the agents clicked handcuffs behind Delaney's back, she looked at Rowan with desperate, bloodshot eyes. "Rowan, please! Don't let them take me! Let me see my babies! Please, I'm their mother!"
Rowan looked at her—really looked at her—seeing for the final time the woman he had once loved, now completely hollowed out by greed, lies, and moral rot.

"You stopped being their mother," Rowan said quietly, "the second you decided their lives were worth less than a bag of cash."
He turned his back on her, walking away into the rain toward Detective Vance's vehicle, leaving her frantic cries fading behind him into the sirens of the night.
