Chapter 2 - The Chemistry of Betrayal

The air in the kitchen grew so cold it felt hard to breathe.

Alessandro didn't move a muscle, but his gaze sharpened until it was like a scalpel. He looked at the porcelain cup, then at the child, and finally up at Sophia.

"Sophia," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a quiet, dangerous register. "What medicine did your husband take?"

Sophia fell to her knees beside her daughter, her body trembling so violently she had to press her forehead against the cold gray stone floor. "My... my husband worked in the chemical refineries in the harbor, Mr. Duca. Two years ago, he was diagnosed with a severe heart condition. The doctor prescribed a specialized liquid digitalis derivative. But one night... the dosage was wrong. The police said he took too much. It was colorless. Odorless to most people. But it had a very specific, faint sweet-almond scent when mixed with hot liquid."

Alessandro's eyes narrowed. He brought the porcelain cup closer to his nose. He inhaled slowly, bypassing the heavy, dark roast of the Colombian beans.

There, right at the back of his throat, was a microscopic trace of something else.

A sickly sweet, almost imperceptible hint of almonds.

Had he taken even one sip, his heart would have stopped within minutes, looking entirely like a massive, natural coronary. A clean, untraceable death for the head of the Duca family.

Alessandro stood up, his towering figure casting a long, terrifying shadow across the kitchen. He didn't look at the maid. He looked at Danny, the new cook.

Danny was still holding the spatula. But his knuckles had turned white, and a single, heavy bead of sweat was rolling down his temple into his sideburn.

"Danny," Alessandro said softly, his tone almost conversational. "Did you prepare this roast yourself?"

May you like

"Y-yes, Mr. Duca," Danny stammered, his voice cracking. "Just like every morning. I grind the beans fresh. Nobody else touches the machine."

"Then you won't mind taking a sip to prove the quality," Alessandro said, stepping forward and holding the white cup out toward the cook.
