CHAPTER 1: THE STRANGER WHO STOPPED A FUNERAL

The chapel was already filled with mourning.

Black suits. Silent tears. White flowers arranged with painful precision around a polished white casket.

Emily Thompson was supposed to be gone.

Declared dead three days earlier.

Everything had already been decided.

Until the doors slammed open.

Elena pushed inside like a storm breaking through silence.

Her bright orange work uniform shattered the atmosphere of grief. She didn’t belong there. Everyone could see it instantly.

But she didn’t stop.

She ran straight toward the casket.

“Move, please!” she shouted, voice shaking but sharp enough to cut through the room.

Gasps erupted.

Whispers spread.

Mark stepped in front of her immediately, blocking her path.

“What do you think you’re doing?” he demanded. “Get out!”

But Elena wasn’t looking at him.

She was looking at the coffin.

Listening.

Like something inside it was calling her.

“I heard it,” she whispered.

“Heard what?” Sarah asked, confused and pale.

Elena swallowed hard.

“A knock.”

The room went still.

Then came disbelief.

A few nervous laughs.

A few shaking heads.

Mark’s expression hardened.

“My sister is dead.”

Elena shook her head instantly.

“No. She isn’t.”

The certainty in her voice shifted the atmosphere.

Because she didn’t sound unstable.

She sounded terrified.

And that was worse.

Security moved in.

A hand grabbed her arm.

“Ma’am, step away.”

Elena pulled free with desperate force, her eyes locked on the coffin.

“Please,” she begged. “Just open it. One minute. That’s all I need.”

The chapel stood frozen between grief… and something no one dared to believe.

And then—

Elena placed her hand on the casket.

And waited.
