Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs

The storm returned with a vengeance during the early hours of Friday morning. Thunder rumbled over the mountains, shaking the glass panes of the mansion as heavy rain lashed against the stone walls.

At eight o'clock sharp, I entered Alessandro’s suite carrying the morning breakfast tray.

Marco was already inside the room, standing near the window, dressed in a sharp gray suit. He was looking at his wristwatch, his posture tense. On the bed, Alessandro lay still beneath the heavy blankets, his eyes closed, his breathing slow, shallow, and raspy.

"Good morning, Mr. Bellini," I said quietly, setting the tray down on the side table with a deliberate, trembling clatter.

"He hasn't woken up yet, Elena," Marco said, his voice calm, though a sharp edge of anticipation ran beneath his words. "He seems exceptionally tired today."

"He was very weak last night, sir," I lied, my voice shaking with perfectly executed panic. I reached over to pick up the amber medication bottle from the nightstand, making sure my fingers slipped.

The glass bottle tumbled from my hands, striking the hardwood floor with a sharp CLACK. The cap popped off, and dozens of white pills spilled out across the floor, rolling under the edge of the bed and the nightstand.

"Oh! Oh, my goodness!" I cried out, dropping to my knees and frantically gathering the loose pills. "I’m so sorry! I’m so clumsy!"

"Careful, Elena," Marco said sternly, stepping forward and reaching down to grab my wrist tightly. "Leave them. I will have the staff clean it up."

"No, sir, I can get them!" I gasped, pulling my arm back and reaching beneath the low mahogany nightstand. My fingers brushed against a dusty, dark metal object hidden in the shadows near the floorboard—a small, square steel access panel built into the baseboard.

I pulled out a handful of white pills, but along with them, I deliberately pulled out a small, heavy black leather notebook that had been tucked behind the nightstand leg.

The notebook tumbled onto the floor right at Marco’s polished shoes.

Marco froze.

His eyes fell upon the leather cover. Embossed on the front in faded gold foil were the letters: A.R. - PERSONAL LOG 2023.

"What is that?" Marco demanded, his voice suddenly dropping all warmth, turning dangerously sharp.

"I... I don't know, sir," I stammered, scrambling backward on my hands and knees toward the door. "It was tucked behind the nightstand. I must have knocked it loose when I reached for the pills."

Marco dropped to one knee, grabbing the black book. He flipped the cover open with frantic urgency.

The pages were filled with Alessandro’s neat, sharp handwriting, dated over the past three years. But it wasn't a diary of grief.

Marco’s eyes flew across the lines, his face turning from pale to a terrifying, ghost-like white as he read the entries:

March 12: Marco redirected the security log files from the perimeter gate prior to the explosion. June 4: Chemical analysis of the daily compound shows trace elements of digitalis. August 19: The wire transfers to the Zurich account were authorized using my forged signature, executed by Marco Bellini.

Marco’s breathing turned wild and ragged. "He knew..." he whispered, his hands shaking violently as he turned to the final page, dated just two days ago.

Written across the bottom of the page in bold, dark ink were eight words:

The trap is set. The evidence is complete.

"You bastard!" Marco roared, whipping around toward the bed.

Alessandro’s eyes snapped open.

There was no weakness in his face. No shallow breathing. No confusion. Alessandro sat straight up in bed, his movement so fast and fluid it caught Marco completely off guard.

In Alessandro’s right hand was a heavy, blued-steel 9mm pistol equipped with a suppressor. He pointed it directly at Marco’s chest.

"Put the book down, Marco," Alessandro commanded, his voice like thunder echoing through the room.

Marco scrambled backward, hitting the side table, knocking the porcelain teacup to the floor where it shattered into a hundred pieces.

"Alessandro!" Marco gasped, his hands flying up into the air, his face dripping with cold sweat. "Listen to me! This is a misunderstanding! The servant—she’s lying to you! She set this up!"

"The servant," Alessandro said, his tone dripping with lethal contempt, "has more loyalty in her pinky finger than you have demonstrated in a lifetime, Marco."

The heavy oak doors of the bedroom suite were suddenly thrown open.

Four broad-shouldered men in dark tactical suits burst into the room, their weapons drawn. But they weren't Marco’s security guards. Leading them was Detective Miller from the State Police Special Investigations Unit, along with two federal agents holding official arrest warrants.

"Marco Bellini!" Detective Miller shouted, his weapon trained on Marco’s head. "Keep your hands where we can see them! On your knees! Now!"

Marco stared at the federal agents, his eyes darting frantically toward the windows, toward the doors, searching for an escape that didn't exist.

"How?" Marco choked out, tears of panic finally breaking through his arrogant facade. "The house guards... the perimeter team... they answer to me!"

"They answered to your money, Marco," Alessandro said coldly, keeping his pistol leveled at his former friend. "Money that came from the rival cartel who paid you to plant the bomb beneath my car three years ago. Money that I seized from your Swiss accounts three hours ago using the master passcodes you left in my daughter’s listening device."

Marco’s jaw dropped. "The... the bug?"

"You monitored my house, Marco," Alessandro whispered, leaning forward over his knees, his dark eyes burning into Marco’s soul. "But you forgot that I designed the encryption protocols for this entire network. Every word you spoke near that toy... every call you made to your offshore bankers... was routed directly to the Federal Organized Crime Task Force."

Detective Miller stepped forward, slamming Marco face-first onto the hardwood floor, pulling his arms behind his back and snapping cold steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

"Marco Bellini," Detective Miller read from a laminated card, "you are under arrest for the murders of Isabella Romano and Sophia Romano, the attempted murder of Alessandro Romano, conspiracy to commit racketeering, and felony corporate fraud."

As the agents dragged Marco to his feet, he looked at Alessandro, his eyes wild with terror and despair.

"Alessandro... please!" Marco begged, his voice cracking. "We were brothers! I saved you!"

May you like

Alessandro didn't answer. He slowly lowered his weapon, turned his face toward the window where the morning light was finally breaking through the rain clouds, and said five final words:

"Take him out of my house."
