CHAPTER 4 — The Lawyer's Letter

CHAPTER 4 — The Lawyer's Letter

Tuesday morning arrived with rain.

Gray clouds hung low over the city, matching the mood inside our home.

Marianne was packing Ethan's lunch when the doorbell rang.

A courier stood outside.

"Delivery for Mr. Ryan Harper."

Certified.

Legal.

I signed.

Marianne looked at the envelope.

"Carol?"

I nodded.

Inside was exactly what I'd expected.

A formal notice from Carol's attorney.

She demanded that I withdraw my guarantor notice immediately.

She accused me of causing financial damages.

And she hinted at legal action if I refused.

At the bottom was a sentence that made me laugh aloud.

We remain hopeful this matter can be resolved within the family.

Within the family.

Those words would have meant something three days earlier.

Not anymore.

I folded the letter carefully.

Then reached for my phone.

There was only one person I wanted to call.

Not my lawyer.

Grandma Eleanor.

She answered on the second ring.

"I was wondering when you'd call."

"I received Carol's letter."

"I know."

"You know?"

Grandma sighed softly.

"She came to see me this morning."

"What did she want?"

"She wanted my signature."

"For what?"

There was a long pause.

"To declare that the trust had always intended to exclude adopted descendants."

The room seemed to freeze around me.

"And?"

"I told her no."

Grandma's voice grew stronger.

"I buried my husband twenty-two years ago."

"I will not let anyone rewrite the values we built together."

For the first time since Easter, I felt something besides anger.

Hope.

Because Carol still had money.

She still had lawyers.

She still had influence.

But she was beginning to lose something far more important.

The people who had once stood silently behind her were finally finding the courage to stand somewhere else.
