Chapter 2 - The Flight to California

The sleek Gulfstream jet cut through the night sky at forty thousand feet, flying west over the darkened expanse of America.
Inside the cabin, soft leather armchairs and ambient warm lighting made the environment feel alien to a woman who calculated every grocery bill down to the cent. Emma and Sophie were sound asleep on the plush velvet sofa, wrapped in cashmere blankets, holding new stuffed bears that the flight crew had presented to them upon boarding.
I sat near the oval window, clutching a warm porcelain mug of tea, staring down at the scattered lights of distant cities below.
Sitting across from me was Julian Vance, Nathaniel’s personal legal advisor and one of the few men inside Crosswave who had remained loyal to him since the early days. He had met us at the private terminal at JFK, securing our luggage and ensuring absolute secrecy.
"He never stopped looking for a trace of you, Natalie," Julian said softly, setting down a leather-bound file on the mahogany table between us. "For the first three years after Crosswave went public, Nathaniel secretly funded a private intelligence firm to track down 'Natalie Harper.' But your mother-in-law—or rather, Eleanor Cross—had executed a masterclass in identity erasure."
"How?" I asked, looking at the heavy file. "I lived in Queens. I didn't leave the country."
"Eleanor paid off a senior registrar in the city database," Julian explained, flicking open the file to reveal forged death certificates and altered tax records. "She created a paper trail showing that 'Natalie Harper' had died in a private clinic in Zurich due to surgical complications. She presented that fake death certificate to Nathaniel on the third anniversary of Crosswave's IPO. It broke him."
My stomach turned. The sheer evil required to tell a man the woman he loved had died, simply to protect corporate equity, was beyond comprehension.
"And Caroline Ashford?" I asked. "Where does she fit into this nightmare?"
Julian sighed, rubbing his temples. "Caroline’s father, Richard Ashford, owes over two hundred million dollars to offshore creditors after a series of failed hotel developments in East Asia. He made a secret pact with Eleanor Cross seven years ago. By forcing a marriage between Nathaniel and Caroline, the Ashford assets and Crosswave’s technology patents would merge into a single umbrella corporation—the Cross-Ashford Trust."
"Control," I murmured.
"Total control," Julian confirmed. "Eleanor and Richard would sit on the board with majority voting power, effectively ousting Nathaniel from his own company while liquidating his patents to pay off Richard’s debts. Caroline was treated like an investment asset by her father. But Caroline is brilliant. She noticed irregularities in the trust's foundation clauses eighteen months ago."
"So she started looking into Eleanor," I said, catching on.
"Precisely," Julian nodded. "Caroline discovered secret monthly payments leaving Eleanor’s personal account to an untraceable offshore shell company in the Cayman Islands. When she tracked the original wire transfers, she found your original name attached to them—except you had never received a penny. Eleanor was using the offshore account to pay off the forged-document network that erased you."
I looked over at my sleeping daughters. Emma shifted in her sleep, her tiny face illuminated by the moonlight reflecting off the clouds.
"They have his face," I whispered.
"They have his soul," Julian corrected gently. "Nathaniel hasn't smiled in eight years, Natalie. He became a ghost running a empire. When he saw those photos attached to the foundation forms this morning... he wept in his office for twenty minutes before calling you."
The jet began its soft descent into Santa Barbara. The city lights appeared through the mist like a scattered blanket of diamonds along the Pacific coast.
My heart hammered against my ribs. I was no longer just a frightened twenty-six-year-old girl pushed out of Manhattan by high-priced lawyers. I was a mother holding the key to a truth that would destroy an empire built on lies.
"What is the plan for the wedding?" I asked, looking Julian dead in the eye.
Julian smiled—a tight, cold, lawyerly smile. "Caroline and Nathaniel have spent the last three days turning the wedding program into an evidentiary presentation. Three hundred of the most powerful tech investors, political leaders, and media executives in the country will be sitting in the grand ballroom of the Ashford Riviera Estate."

He tapped the file resting on the table.
"Eleanor Cross and Richard Ashford think they are attending a union of wealth. They have no idea they are attending an execution."
