Chapter 4 - The Counter-Attack

The hospital room suddenly felt ten degrees colder.

I stared at the black screen of my phone, the blood pounding in my temples like a war drum. They hadn't even waited an hour. While Officer Miller and Officer Davis were walking out the door to investigate, my father had already deployed a corporate pit bull attorney to threaten me with fabricated charges of kidnapping and drug abuse.

"Who was that?" Sarah asked sharply, reading the dark expression on my face.

"Arthur Sterling," I said, my voice shaking with a rage so cold it felt like ice water in my veins. "My father's lawyer. They've already filed a counter-complaint. Bethany is claiming I assaulted her and inflicted the bruises on Rosie to frame her."

Officer Miller stopped with his hand on the examination room door handle, turning back slowly. "They're claiming you framed your own kid?"

"That's what the lawyer just told me on the phone," I said, holding up the screen. "They're filing an ex-parte emergency custody petition alleging I'm unstable and abducted her from a family gathering."

Miller let out a low whistle, shaking his head. "Classic playbook. When wealthy, connected families get caught red-handed, they don't apologize—they rewrite the narrative and bury the victim under a mountain of legal paperwork until you run out of money or spirit."

Sarah stepped forward, her eyes flashing with professional combativeness. "Not this time. Sterling & Associates is a high-priced corporate defense firm, not a family law specialist. They don't handle criminal child abuse cases every day. Furthermore, ex-parte petitions require a verified affidavit signed under penalty of perjury. If Bethany signed a sworn statement claiming Mark inflicted those bruises, and our independent ER medical report from Dr. Vance proves digital compression consistent with an adult's handprint within a specific timeframe, Bethany just walked herself right into a felony perjury trap."

"Perjury?" I looked at Sarah. "Can we prove it?"

"We don't have to prove it," Sarah smiled grimly. "The state of Colorado will prove it the moment she signs her name to a false police statement while our timestamped photos and hospital records are already stamped into the municipal database."

Dr. Vance walked back into the room holding a sealed manila envelope containing the official medical findings. She handed it directly to Sarah. "Here is the complete clinical report, toxicology screen, and forensic photo documentation. It's already been uploaded to the state child welfare portal. If anyone tries to take that little girl out of this hospital without a signed judge's order countermanding my medical hold, hospital security will detain them."

"Thank you, Doctor," I whispered, my voice thick with emotion. I looked down at Rosie, who was now yawning softly against the hospital pillow. "Can I take her home now?"

"You can take her to a secure, undisclosed location," Sarah advised immediately. "Do not go back to your apartment tonight, Mark. Your parents know where you live. Your father's friends probably know your landlord. Pack your bags, grab whatever you need, and stay at my guest house in Littleton until the Monday morning court hearing."

An hour later, Officer Miller and Officer Davis returned to the hospital with grim expressions.

"We spoke to them," Miller announced, leaning against the counter. "Your parents are circling the wagons like a cavalry unit. Your sister Bethany claims she never touched the child, that she was sitting across the room the whole time, and that you flew into a jealous, drug-fueled rage because she criticized your parenting. Your father backed her up 100%. Even your brother Daniel mumbled something about not seeing anything clearly because he was working the camera."

"Lions protecting a wounded jackal," Davis added with disgust. "They all stuck to the exact same script. Not a single one of them would admit the child had bruises until we showed them the Polaroid copies we took from your phone."

"And what did they say when you showed them the photos?" I asked.

"Your mother claimed Rosie fell off a jungle gym yesterday at the park," Miller sighed. "And when we pointed out the photos were taken inside the guest bathroom at their house during the party, your father told us to get off his property without a search warrant."

"Well, they're going to get more than a search warrant by Monday morning," Sarah said, tapping her briefcase. "Let's move, Mark. We've got a legal counter-offensive to launch before sunrise."
