Chapter 6 - The Spring of True Beginnings

The first Sunday of May brought a different kind of spring holiday—not a high-stakes, hyper-staged family production where everyone walked on eggshells and performed affection for an audience, but a simple, unscripted weekend afternoon.
Elena had decided to host a backyard barbecue.
There were no twenty-three critical relatives seated around a folding table judging her parenting, her divorce, or her clothes. There was no aunt whispering about her budget or grandmother making casual, venomous remarks about her children.
Instead, the backyard was filled with people who actually loved them: two neighborhood families they had grown close to over the past few years, Marlo’s best friend from soccer, and a couple of Elena’s supportive coworkers from the logistics office.
The grill sizzled with burgers and hot dogs. The sound of children splashing in a cheap plastic sprinkler filled the warm afternoon air.
Theo ran across the emerald-green lawn, chasing a red soccer ball with muddy sneakers, laughing with a wild, unrestrained joy that hadn't been possible when he had to worry about being called a "parasite" by the woman who was supposed to love him.
Marlo walked up to the grill carrying a tray of sliced watermelon, smiling brightly as she handed a piece to her mother.
"You know, Mom," Marlo said, looking out over the lively, peaceful yard, "this is a lot better than Easter."

Elena smiled, wrapping an arm around her daughter’s shoulders and pulling her close. The lingering shadows of her past family trauma felt distant now, faded like a bad dream upon waking.
"It’s not just better, sweetheart," Elena whispered, pressing a kiss to the top of Marlo’s head as she watched Theo score an imaginary goal against the garden hose. "It’s real. And it’s ours to keep."
