CHAPTER 10 — THE PRICE OF EXPOSURE

"He’s going to file the injunction on Friday," Vanessa said, her voice echoing slightly in the vast, empty library of the Whitmore estate.

Margot sat behind the massive oak desk, looking exactly as she always did: pristine, unbothered, and entirely in control. A crystal glass of amber liquid sat by her right hand. She hadn't offered Vanessa a seat, and Vanessa hadn't asked for one.

"Scott is a small man with a very loud megaphone," Margot said smoothly, not looking up from the document she was reviewing. "A dangerous combination, certainly, but ultimately predictable."

"Is it true?" Vanessa demanded, stepping closer to the desk. "Did you liquidate millions ten years ago? Is this whole system a fraud to cover up corporate theft?"

Margot finally raised her eyes. They were cold, gray, and completely devoid of fear. "Your grandfather built a global logistics network, Vanessa. In that world, money moves in ways that look complicated to people who only understand a monthly salary. Was it legal? Absolutely. Was it clean? It depends on who is defining cleanliness."

"You lied to me," Vanessa whispered, anger finally breaking through her shock. "You gave me that speech about responsibility. You let me read his letter!"

"The letter was real. The words were his," Margot said, leaning back. "And the lesson remains unchanged. You and Scott lived like royalty on blood money you never bothered to question. As long as the checks cleared, you didn't care where they came from. Now that the tap is turned off, Scott wants to call it a crime. That isn't justice, Vanessa. That’s sour grapes."

"He’s dragging Carter into this," Vanessa said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, lethal register. "I got a threat. Someone called my phone. If anything happens to my son because of your ledger and Scott’s ego, I will burn this entire place to the ground myself. Do you understand me?"

For the first time, a flicker of something resembling respect passed through Margot’s eyes. She set her pen down.

"I didn't make that call, Vanessa. And neither did anyone working for me," Margot said quietly. "If Scott is talking to a forensic accountant in Chicago, he isn't just looking at my files. He’s looking at the people your grandfather did business with before he died. People who do not use paperwork to settle disputes."

Vanessa felt the air leave her lungs. "Who?"

Before Margot could answer, the heavy double doors of the library burst open.

It was Scott. But he wasn't alone.

Two men in dark suits followed him, along with a woman carrying a digital recording device and a badge clipped to her lapel.

"Margot Whitmore," the woman said, her voice carrying the unmistakable authority of a federal officer. "I’m Special Agent Vance with the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division. We have a federal warrant for the seizure of all physical and digital records pertaining to the Whitmore Family Trust."

Scott stood behind the agents, a triumphant, manic grin plastered across his face. He looked at Margot, then at Vanessa.

"I told you," Scott gloated, his voice dripping with venom. "The system is finished listening. Now, it's time to watch it crash."

May you like

Margot didn't blink. She slowly stood up, smoothing the front of her skirt.

"Agent Vance," Margot said calmly. "You're late. I've been expecting you for ten years."
