Chapter 3 - The Eviction

The silence inside the country house was absolute, save for the faint, tinny playback of the security recording continuing on Clarissa’s phone.

“The debt collectors for Mason’s private school tuition are calling me twice a day... Parker promised he’d get the money from her!”

Clarissa paused the video and looked at the two women.

Ellie was shaking, her face pale, her jaw hanging open. “You... you were recording us? That’s illegal! That’s an invasion of privacy! I’ll sue you!”

“This is a private residence, and there are prominent signs posted at both entrances stating that the premises are monitored by audio and video security,” Clarissa replied coolly. “In the state of Ohio, that constitutes legal notice. Furthermore, what you two just discussed on this recording is conspiracy to commit grand larceny, fraud, and financial extortion.”

Alana stood up slowly, her knees trembling. The smug, arrogant matriarch who had spent the morning torturing a seven-year-old boy was completely gone, replaced by a terrified, caught fraudster.

“Clarissa... please,” Alana stuttered, her hands fluttering near her chest. “You misunderstood! We were just... we were just talking! Families vent! People say crazy things when they’re stressed!”

“Ten minutes,” Clarissa said, pointing her finger toward the open door. “Pack your bags, grab your son, and get out of my house.”

“Clarissa, think about Parker!” Ellie pleaded, stepping forward, her tone suddenly shifting from hostility to desperate begging. “He’s your husband! If you ruin this, you ruin his life! Mason has school in the fall! We don't have anywhere else to go!”

“Then I suggest you check into a cheap motel near the train station,” Clarissa said without a shred of mercy. “Because at 2:30 PM, the automatic locks engage, the alarm activates, and any unauthorized person on this property will be removed in handcuffs.”

Dustin walked down the stairs, carrying his small backpack over his shoulder. He stood beside his mother, holding her hand tightly. He looked at his grandmother and aunt—no longer with fear, but with the quiet security of knowing his mother was an immovable shield in front of him.

Mason, seeing the tension, began to cry, clinging to Ellie’s arm.

“Look what you’re doing to my son!” Ellie shrieked, tears finally bursting from her eyes as she began shoving their clothes haphazardly into their suitcases. “You’re a monster! A cold-hearted, selfish monster!”

“I am a mother protecting her child,” Clarissa corrected her evenly. “Something you clearly know nothing about.”

For the next eight minutes, the living room was a whirlwind of frantic packing. Alana, weeping softly in a mixture of anger and panic, pulled her coats from the closet, while Ellie dragged three heavy bags out onto the gravel driveway.

At 2:28 PM, Clarissa ushered them across the threshold.

As Alana stepped onto the porch, she turned back, her eyes filled with venom. “Parker will leave you for this! You will end up completely alone, Clarissa!”

“Parker won't have the chance to leave me,” Clarissa said.

She stepped back inside, pulled the heavy oak door shut, and turned the lock. A sharp beep-beep echoed through the foyer as she keyed in the security code on the wall panel, activating the perimeter sensors and high-decibel sirens.

Through the side window, she watched as Alana, Ellie, and Mason dragged their heavy luggage down the long gravel driveway toward the main road under the blazing July sun, looking like castaways stranded in the countryside.

Clarissa turned to her son. She knelt down, wrapping her arms around his small frame, pulling him close until she could feel his heartbeat steadying against her chest.

“It’s over, Dustin,” she whispered into his hair. “They will never, ever hurt you again. I promise.”

“Mom?” Dustin asked softly.

“Yes, baby?”

“Can we make real fried chicken now?”

A breathless, tearful laugh escaped Clarissa’s lips. “We can make all the fried chicken in the world.”

But as she walked into the kitchen with Dustin, her phone buzzed again. It was a text message from her corporate bank app, issuing an automated alert:

ALERT: UNSUCCESSFUL OVERDRAFT ATTEMPT.

Joint Account #4092.

Attempted Withdrawal: $85,000.00 USD.

Initiated by: Parker Miller.

Clarissa’s eyes narrowed into slits. Parker was already moving his pawns. He was trying to drain her corporate reserves before she realized what was happening.

She immediately tapped her screen to dial her corporate attorney, Evelyn Reed.

“Evelyn,” Clarissa said the moment the line connected. “I need an emergency freeze on all accounts connected to Parker Miller, an immediate petition for divorce, and an ex-parte restraining order. And Evelyn... I have video evidence.”
