Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

At 9:00 AM, Daniel stood outside the heavy glass doors of Blackwood & Vance Investigative Services, a high-end private security and corporate intelligence firm located in the financial district. He pushed through the doors holding a sealed manila envelope containing digital photographs of Lily’s bruised cheek, medical documentation from an urgent care clinic he had visited at 4:00 AM, and copies of financial ledger entries proving the Whitmore family's extensive history of judicial bribery.
Across town at the Whitmore Estate, the atmosphere was far from victorious.
Patricia Whitmore sat at the head of the long mahogany dining table, her posture rigid, her face locked in an expression of icy fury. The remnants of the Christmas Gala had been cleared away, but the humiliation of the public spectacle still hung thick in the air.
Claire paced back and forth across the Persian rug, wringing her hands, her designer robe dragging slightly on the floor.
"I told you we should have handled him quietly, Mother," Claire snapped, her voice cracking under stress. "Threatening him with custody motions? Have you lost your mind? Daniel isn't a coward. If he feels cornered, he’ll leak everything to the press!"
"Let him try," Patricia said, her voice like grinding stones. "The media in this state answers to our advertising budgets. Every major newspaper, every local television affiliate—they all depend on Whitmore Enterprises for survival. A disgruntled father making wild abuse claims against a pillar of the community? He’ll be branded a delusional, unstable lunatic before dinner time."
Marcus walked into the dining room, tossing his car keys onto the credenza. "I just spoke with Judge Holloway," Marcus announced, a self-satisfied smirk touching his lips. "He’s an old fishing buddy of father’s. The ex parte emergency custody order is already drafted. All we need is for the process servers to track Daniel down and slap him with the paperwork. By tomorrow morning, Lily will be back in this house, and Daniel will be facing criminal contempt charges."
Claire stopped pacing. She looked at her mother, then at her brother. A cold, hollow feeling crept into her chest. For the first time, she wasn't thinking about the Whitmore dynasty or the state senators who had watched the slap. She was thinking about Lily’s wide, terrified blue eyes as she whispered, “Daddy, am I bad?”
"What if he doesn't come back, Mother?" Claire asked softly, her voice barely a whisper. "What if we’ve pushed him too far?"

Patricia rose from her chair, walking slowly over to her daughter. She placed a cold, heavy hand on Claire’s shoulder.
"In our family, Claire, weakness is a disease," Patricia said coldly. "And Daniel is trying to infect us all. We will crush him. There is no other option."
