CHAPTER 2 – THE SILENCE THAT COST THEM EVERYTHING

The room erupted in laughter.
Not everyone laughed.
Mike chuckled.
Irene covered her mouth, pretending she was shocked while failing to hide her smile.
My mother sighed dramatically.

"Oh, Tyler... boys will be boys."
No one stood to help Stephanie.
No one handed her a towel.
No one scolded Tyler.
Stephanie calmly reached for a napkin and dabbed at her soaked dress.
"It's only soda," she said quietly.
Tyler smirked.
"I told you."
"You don't belong here."
Stephanie looked directly at him.
There was no anger in her eyes.
Only disappointment.
She picked up her untouched gift bag from the sideboard.
"I think I'll head home."
Her mother barely looked up.
"Drive safely."
That was all.
No apology.
No hug.
No attempt to stop her.
That night, Stephanie unlocked the small office behind her candle and home décor store.
She opened a folder labeled Family Loan Guarantee.
Five years earlier, when Mike's construction business had nearly collapsed, no bank would approve financing.
Stephanie had quietly signed as the personal guarantor.
She never told anyone.
Not even her mother.
She simply wanted her brother's family to survive.
The loan officer had once warned her,
"If you ever withdraw your guarantee, the bank can immediately reassess the loan."
She had smiled.
"I understand."
Tonight...
for the first time...
she signed the withdrawal request.
The manager looked surprised.
"Are you certain?"
Stephanie nodded.
"My responsibility ended tonight."
May you like
The paperwork was processed before the bank closed.
She drove home without looking back.
