Chapter 4 - The Lake House Showdown

Friday afternoon arrived, the sky over South Carolina a brilliant, unclouded blue.

Despite every warning, despite the explicit revocation of access, and despite the clear legal boundaries set by Ben, Karen’s arrogance proved to be boundless. She believed Ben was bluffing. She believed that when faced with a real confrontation, her timid brother-in-law would fold like he always had in the past.

At 4:30 PM, Rob Henson’s name flashed on Ben’s phone screen.

Ben clicked speakerphone so I could hear. "Go ahead, Rob."

"They're here, Ben," Rob said, his voice laced with disbelief. "Two SUVs just pulled up to the main security gate. A silver Lexus and a black Lincoln Navigator. There's a guy in a suit in the passenger seat of the Lincoln—looks like Mark's boss. Karen got out and tried typing her old code into the keypad."

"And?" Ben asked, completely unbothered.

"The pad beeped red," Rob chuckled. "She tried three more times, then started hitting the keypad box with her palm. Now Mark is out of the car arguing with her, and the guy in the suit is looking around like he wants to disappear into the bushes."

"Is the gate clear?"

"Fully locked," Rob confirmed. "I’m sitting in my truck down the access road watching through my binoculars. What do you want me to do?"

Ben looked at me. I nodded once.

"Call Sheriff Vance," Ben said clearly. "Give him the property deed details I filed with his office on Tuesday. Tell him we have trespassers attempting to breach the security gate."

"On it," Rob said and hung up.

Ten minutes later, Karen tried a direct approach. My phone rang. It was an incoming FaceTime call from Karen.

I answered, setting the phone up against a vase on the kitchen table.

The screen illuminated with Karen’s frantic, sweat-streaked face. The bright sun of the Silver Lake tree line was visible behind her. In the background, Mark was pacing back and forth, frantically gesturing to a tall man in an expensive navy suit.

"Sarah!" Karen screamed into the phone, the noise of wind howling through her microphone. "The keypad isn't working! Rob Henson isn't answering his radio! We’re stuck outside the main gate with Mr. Sterling! Unlock the gate right now from your app!"

Ben stepped into the camera frame, standing right beside me.

"Karen," Ben said calmly. "I told you on Sunday that your lake weekends were over. Did you think I was joking?"

"Benjamin!" Mark yelled, running up behind Karen and shoving his face toward the screen. "Ben, please! Mr. Sterling drove three hours from Atlanta! We have a half-million-dollar contract riding on this weekend! Just open the gate! We can settle the personal stuff on Monday!"

"There is no 'personal stuff' to settle, Mark," Ben said smoothly. "You were told explicitly not to come to my property. You brought your business associate to a private residence without authorization after being warned in writing."

"You are ruining my life!" Karen shrieked, tears of pure rage smearing her mascara. "You petty, jealous little loser! Just open the damn gate!"

At that exact moment, the faint, rising wail of a police siren echoed over the phone speaker.

Behind Karen, a white-and-green county sheriff cruiser pulled onto the narrow gravel road, its red and blue lights flashing brightly against the pine trees.

Mark’s face turned completely grey. "Oh God... Oh God, is that the police?"

Sheriff Vance, a broad-shouldered man with a gold star pinned to his brown uniform, stepped out of the cruiser, his hand resting casually on his belt.

"Evening," Sheriff Vance’s voice echoed clearly over the phone microphone. "Got a call from the property owner regarding an unauthorized entry attempt on private land. Who’s the owner of the silver Lexus blocking the primary emergency gate?"

"Officer!" Karen squawked, turning around frantically. "This is a family misunderstanding! My brother-in-law owns this house! He's just having a technical issue with the gate!"

"I’m looking at the property registration right here, ma'am," Sheriff Vance said, pulling a clipboard from his car door. "Owner is Benjamin Mitchell. He filed a formal No-Trespass Order for this parcel on Tuesday afternoon. Listed names: Karen Mitchell, Mark Mitchell, Diane Mitchell."

The tall man in the navy suit—Mr. Sterling—didn't say a single word. He quietly walked back to the Lincoln Navigator, opened the door, grabbed his leather overnight bag, and pulled out his phone to call an Uber.

"Mr. Sterling!" Mark cried out, turning around in absolute panic. "Mr. Sterling, wait! We can get a hotel in town! We can still do the dinner!"

Mr. Sterling looked at Mark with cold, unblinking corporate disgust. "Don't bother calling my office on Monday, Mark. I don't do business with people who get escorted off private property by county deputies."

"Now, folks," Sheriff Vance’s voice was firm and unyielding. "You have five minutes to turn these vehicles around and clear the county road, or I’m calling a tow truck and issuing formal citations for criminal trespass."

Ben smiled softly into the phone camera. "Have a safe drive back to the city, Karen."

He reached out and tapped the red button, ending the call.
