Chapter 6 - The Truth in the Safe

Back at the compound, the sun was just beginning to crest the horizon, painting the lake in strokes of gold and bruised purple.
I walked through the grand doors of the mansion, smelling coffee and fresh toast. The housekeepers had settled Lily into the guest suite next to mine, decorating it with pastel colors and a mountain of stuffed animals she had quietly accepted with polite curiosity.
When I pushed open the door to my study, Arthur Sterling was waiting beside my desk, holding a heavy, fireproof metal box.
“What is that?” I asked, dropping my tactical vest onto the leather sofa.
“Your father’s private wall safe,” Arthur said, his voice trembling slightly. “We found it behind the portrait of your grandfather in the basement vault. It’s encrypted with a biometric scanner that only opened when I inputted your father’s primary DNA sequence—or yours.”
I walked over to the desk, staring at the scarred steel box.
“Open it.”
Arthur pressed the latch. With a heavy, pneumatic hiss, the lid popped open.
Inside wasn't money, bearer bonds, or guns.
It was a stack of old medical files, a set of baby footprints stamped in ink on yellowed hospital paper, and a handwritten letter sealed in an envelope bearing my mother’s handwriting—a woman who had died when I was ten years old.
My hands shook as I picked up the letter. I broke the wax seal and unfolded the heavy paper.
‘My dearest Julian, If you are reading this, it means Vincent is gone, and the truth has finally come to light. You always believed your mother died of an illness in the hospital. You were lied to. She didn't die of an illness—she was targeted by our enemies when you were a boy. To protect you, Vincent hid us both away in a safehouse on the South Side. But in the crossfire... she didn't survive. And the child she was carrying—your sister, Lily—was rescued by a trusted nurse who hid her in Harbor House. Vincent never told you because the guilt would have consumed you. He spent forty years building an empire of blood just to buy enough power to keep the remnants of our family safe in the shadows. Protect your sister, Julian. She is the only piece of your mother we ever got back.’
The room dissolved around me.
The cold, calculated armor I had worn my entire life—the armor that made me the most feared mafia boss in the country—shattered into a thousand irreparable pieces.

She wasn't just my father’s secret child.
She was my sister. Born of the mother I thought I had lost to a sterile hospital bed, hidden away by a desperate father who carried the weight of the world on his shoulders so I could grow up to inherit a throne of blood.
