Chapter 9 - The Verdict of the State

The trial of Rodrigo and Ofelia Fleming began in the first week of December, a cold, gray month that felt entirely appropriate for the final reckoning of a family that had lived in the shadows for so long.

The courtroom was packed to capacity with reporters, legal observers, and former associates who had once bent the knee to the Fleming name and were now desperate to see them fall. Valeria sat at the prosecution table, dressed in a sharp, elegant navy suit, her posture perfectly erect, her voice clear and unwavering as she delivered her testimony over three grueling days.

She didn't look at Rodrigo once while she spoke. She didn't need to.

Rodrigo sat at the defense table, his face thin, his hair graying at the temples, his hands shackled to his belt whenever the jury left the room. The smooth, serpentine executive was completely gone; he looked like a man who had finally realized that the audience had stopped listening to his performance.

On the final day of the proceedings, the judge—a severe, unyielding man named Vance—read the jury’s verdict into the record.

Guilty on all counts. Federal conspiracy, financial fraud, witness intimidation, and aggravated domestic assault.

The sentences were read without a single trace of emotion. Ofelia Fleming was sentenced to twelve years at a federal medical facility in West Virginia. Rodrigo Fleming was sentenced to thirty-five years at a maximum-security penitentiary, without the possibility of parole for the first twenty-five.

As the bailiffs led Rodrigo out of the courtroom for the final time, he stopped in the center aisle, his eyes locking onto Valeria with a desperate, pathetic fury.

"Valeria!" he croaked, his voice raw, his hands rattling against the heavy steel chains. "You won't survive without me! You're nothing without the name!"

Valeria didn't flinch. She stood up from the prosecution table, walked over to where I was waiting for her in the front row, and slipped her hand securely into mine. She looked at him then, her gaze cool, distant, and completely empty of any lingering trace of his power.

"My name is Valeria Sinclair," she said, her voice carrying clearly through the silent courtroom. "And I am already home."

Rodrigo was pulled through the heavy double doors, the sound of his shackles fading away into the concrete corridors of the building, leaving us to the quiet, cleansing silence of our freedom.
